Has anyone here had a hernia?

I sat down this afternoon and bent over to pick up something on the floor and started wincing. Then I felt a bump in my upper abs. It's nothing too painful but I am concerned. People I've talked to said that I might have a hernia. I fear I got it from working out (I'm doing a 5 day split for weight training plus cardio). I do have a doctor's appointment on Monday.
How do you know when you have a hernia and what should I do until I see the doctor? Thanks in advance.

Sure sounds like a hernia to me. I would rest and try not to do anything this weekend.

Re: Has anyone here had a hernia?

sounds like a hernia to me as well. without knowing exactly where it is it is hard to diagnosis what type of herenia. since you said upper abs i would guess an epigastric hernia.

i would take it really easy as well. they can get really painful.

The only thing I know about hernia's is assuming that was what the nurses were looking for when they put there hands down under Big Jim and the twins and told me to cough.........Good luck.

Re: Has anyone here had a hernia?

Definitely take it easy.....I have one that flares up when I get a little too careless, and usually anti-inflammatories settle it back down. Be prepared to turn your head and cough.

Re: Has anyone here had a hernia?

I had a hernia in college, the buldge was not in my abs though. Take it easy until Monday and wait for the Doc to tell you about the surgery options.

Re: Has anyone here had a hernia?

I have lived with what I assume is a hernia for the past 4-5 years. It doesn't bother me at all, and only shows up after I over eat or go through a sneezing or coughing episode. Its right above my bellybutton and is kind of disgusting because I can literally tuck it back in if it pops out a little. I never thought much of it, but is there anything dangerous that can come of it besides some discomfort?

I had something very similar except a little lower and off to one side, way back when my age was in the single digits. It was diagnosed as a hernia, and was fixed with surgery. I remember them telling me that it would come back on the other side in a year or so, and it did, and then it got fixed on the other side. In my case, as soon as the doctor saw it, he set me up for surgery, so apparently they didn't feel it was something that should go untreated.

Re: Has anyone here had a hernia?

A hernia is when a muscle tears in your abdominal cavity and part of your intestine pops through. I had one when I was in high school for 3 years before I said anything about it. They don't bother some people, but they can be very painful for others, and in time can cause problems for everyone as it can mess up digestion.... or at least that is what the doctors told me. They sew in a piece of mesh to hold the weak muscle areas back together. Usually if you get one you'll get another one later. The surgery isn't that bad and your usually only out of doing normal activities for a day or two and lifting for a month or two.

Re: Has anyone here had a hernia?

I had the hernia for four to five years and really didn't have any problems with it, you could see it but that was about it. Then one day I started to get pains in the area. I guess it can get twisted and that is when the pain starts and the doctor really pushes for the surgery. It was a dull pain that would become unbearable at times.

Strangulation of the intestines is your biggest worry.
