I can't I live in Inner Des Moines but I have lived in building 11 of Fredricksen court on the South end of it - aka I watched the trains going by at midnight and 1 and 2 and 3 in the morning (and whatever times in between), I got used to it.
Grant you they didn't use their horns because they went over a bridge, they were just loud as they went by. Or stopped. Or started moving again.
Got pretty used to it when I lived 1 street over from the railroad tracks in Robins too...
*shrugs* Atleast the F-18's don't fly over head at night for the most part where I am now... I probally wouldn't be as ok with them. They're rather loud when they're flying low over your apartment | Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State, and may her colors ever fly! Go Cyclones, in accordance with Prophecy |

Try living on a military base that specializes on fighter jets...

I now live right next to a Navy base (I can see it from the path to the beach) that does aircraft testing and test pilot training, and am in a flight path they use when taking off...
Oh and they do catapult launches and traps on the runway as well sometimes... (aka taking off and landing with engines throttled up high)
First thing I noticed when I moved to Iowa was how quiet it was compared to Andrews.
First thing I noticed when I got down to Pax was how much I'd forgotten how loud a fighter can be | Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State, and may her colors ever fly! Go Cyclones, in accordance with Prophecy |

Get a soft pillow and an ear plug. Pillow takes care of one ear/ear plug of the other

My wife and I bought our current, Iowa house, because it was right on final for the local airport. She's a pilot, and I'm a certified aircraft mechanic, so we both like the noise.
We will wake up when the aircraft are overhead, and sleepily discuss who it sounds like, and how well they run the throttles in the glide path, and fall back asleep.
We also work in the yard on weekend and grade approaches and landings of aircraft.
It's kind of like heaven for both of us.
Where we live now, is on one approach to a bombing range, so the fighter-bombers tend to either scream in hot, or make their hard turn over our house. We had a Eurofighter come in at around 100 feet, balls to the wall last month right over our house.
Dang, I miss flying....

In case you didn't know, they are required to honk the horn at all railroad crossings by federal law.
