Yeah, I GUARANTEE that every studio would rather make $300 million movies than win an Oscar, or to have some blogger give them +rep for making a good movie.

Re: Lackluster Blockbusters

I am all for well directed deep movies, but sometimes a blow em up action no brainer is fun too. Some people take movies too seriously. I realize that the "there is no way that would happen in real life" situations happen in movies. Thats the point, its a movie. There was alot that annoyed me on Transformers that Bay does, but in general 75 percent of the movie was enjoyable. Lucas really pooched Star Wars. His CGI was a big toy for him that he couldnt put down to make the s-c-r-i-p-t and acting decent. There was some camp to the originals, but they were well made entertainment.

The summer movie season is typically the big "everyone wants to see this movies".Summer movies are pure profit films that will generate buzz.

The movies for depth in writing and cinematic "expression" aren't released until late in the year and just prior to Oscar time.

Comparing them is like apples and oranges.

If it weren't for Titanic, I wouldn't have been able to get any sleep that summer. My 2nd floor apartment didn't have air conditioning.

This guy totally lost me when he said Will Smith does not make a good hero/protagonist. How did this guy con someone to pay him to write about movies?

No kidding. I think Will Smith is becoming of the great actors of our time.

He's certainly the most lucrative right now. He's had seven $100 million movies in a row. Who would have guessed that the guy who sang "Parents Just Don't Understand" would be called "the most powerful actor in Hollywood" by Newsweek?

He's definitely my favorite actor. I'm not a fan of his rap though.

I like the line at the end of the article "The views above are Sean Nelson's ... so don't get angry at all of us. Some of us want to beat him up, too, including his editor. Either way, write to us at heymsn@microsoft.com and give us your worst blockbusters, and ways to punish Sean" It appears his editor thinks he's and idiot also.

And most expensive. Word is that he is getting around $25 million per movie.

I loved him in I Am Legend...he did a great job although the movie lacked a little (I still enjoyed it though).

I agree and disagree with a lot of ones on that list, but overall: many major blockbuster movies are straight garbage and there is no one to blame for it other than the fans. If moviegoers keep going because they spend a bunch of money then they are gonna keep making the same crap.

How do we know its crap until we see it? There lies the issue.

Re: Lackluster Blockbusters

hahaha. I read that article earlier today - it made me laugh. His entire premise is bad; he's never explicitly says what his point is. That there have been movies that made a lot of money that weren't artistic? Or that big studio moneymakers should be forbidden from their intended purpose, which is making money? A 15 year old could come up with a better story. Honestly.

Re: Lackluster Blockbusters

I can definitely agree with him on some of those movies, I took umbrage with a few though- I give passes to kid's movies for who they are aimed at ET and Home Alone 1/2 are still pretty solid flicks.
The Spiderman(at least the first 2) were good flicks and the first well done superhero story in some time, sounds like he's just bitter about Rami. I also like Emmerich's work of The Patriot. Also for guilty pleasure just because of the sheer variety of weather depicted The Day After Tomorrow, but that one isn't very good. Also Michael Bay is terrible!
