DMACC classes

I already have a BA but have been out of college for about 10 years and am looking to take a few Java classes. Are the classes at DMACC worth anything?

Re: DMACC classes

It has been like 7 years ago, but I signed up for a C++ class at DMACC. I showed up for class the first night with the other 10 or so people in the class. No teacher. No one ever showed up to teach.

Went back the next time and the teacher actually showed up, no explanation for the prior class. Proceded then to try to get software installed on the computers in the room for that whole class. Guy was clueless. I dropped the class and demanded my money back.

The good thing is that my work will pay for it whether it sucks or not.

My work was going to do that too, but my time is more valuable to me than to waste it there.

Re: DMACC classes

Although this doesn't apply specifically to the class you are considering, here is my experience with DMACC. About 10 years ago, took 2 econ classes for my undergraduate degree. The best way to describe it is the 13th grade, just like high school. There were no assignments, I spent only 1/2 hour studying before each multiple-choice test, I only went to 1/2 of the classes, and still ended up with more points than were possible due to the extra-credit test questions. Amazingly, there were classmates that were scraping by with C's and D's.

Re: DMACC classes

Man, wish I would have gone to DMACC. The JUCO I went to was actually tougher than ISU imo...

Re: DMACC classes

It would be a good thing to get the weed out classes and prerequisites out of the way at DMACC. Cheaper, and easier.

I took Java classes at DMACC 5 years ago, and they were beginner courses. Enough to write a Hello World app, but nothing major. At least it would acquaint you with some of the syntax. The VB and C# classes have been upgraded, if I remember correctly. They are similar to Java, and would be more worth your time.

VB is similar to Java?

Re: DMACC classes

VB isn't similar but C# is very similar.

Re: DMACC classes

I agree with the poster about 13th grade. I took a speech class at DMACC in the summer because I'm deathly afraid of speaking in front of a group. It was a small class (compared to ISU) and not much work so it worked out well for me. Not sure I'd take a "technical" class there though.

Hence the reference to VB only.

Re: DMACC classes

Ok, you got me. C# and Java are very similar, while not to VB. But it is also very easy to transfer from VB to C#, and vice versa.

Fair enough?

Agreed. Especially the latest standards.

Fair enough. Now that we've hijacked the OP's thread

Surely you aren't referring to a M$ product and standards in the same breath
