1950s Johnny B. Goode- Chuck Berry. (this is the birth of Rock and Roll)
1960s Can't Explain- The Who (the birth of the greatest rock band ever)
1970s Thunder Road- Bruce Springsteen (without a doubt the single best song ever written.)
1980s Welcome to the Jungle- G & R ( Too bad Axel completley ruined one of the best rock bands ever)
1990s You Oughta Know- Alanis Morrisette (This song is just brilliant)
2000s Hurt-Johnny Cash (pure raw and powerful emotion from one of the all-time greats)

90's = Mr. Vain "Hold me back, the simple fact is that I'm all that" & "Who's gonna be the one to save you from yourself when you wanna take a bite?"...Great lines..LOL
80s = Way too many to pick from. Perhaps "I love Rock n Roll" or "Crimson and Clover" by Joan Jett. "Centerfold" and "Freezeframe" were great as well. I could probably put a 100 songs here.
70's = However much it pains me, I have to say YMCA. It was awesome at the time.

God I feel old reading those lists. I haven't heard of some of those from the 2000's...
I have way too many to list from the 80's and 90's, but I'll try subcategories...if allowable:
90's rap: Let Me Ride
90's country: Standing Outside the Fire
90's rock: anything from GnR's use your illusion
90's pop: Crash
90's alternative: 1979
80's rock: Panama
80's pop: Power of Love
80's country: Ocean Front Property

50s - Rebel Rouser - Duane Eddy
60s - The Weight - The Band
70s - Baba O'Riley - The Who
80s - Alex Chilton - The Replacements
90s - Hey Jealousy - The Gin Blossoms
00s - Lost Cause - Beck
Baba O'Riley barely beats out The Weight for best song ever.

Baba O'Riley barely beats out The Weight for best song ever. Ooh. Beck's "Lost Cause" - that actually be my favorite song of the '00's. "Debra" was on my list for the '90's.
Fantastic taste!

I'll give a runner up for a decade since there are so darn many good songs...
1960s- 1. Paint it Black (the quintessential, offiical song of the Vietnam War) 2. We gotta get out of this place- the animals
1970s 1. Badlands- Bruce Springsteen 2. Someday Never Comes- CCR
1980s 1. Red Hill Mining Town- U2 (or should I just say the entire album Joshua Tree?) 2. The Chauffer- Duran Duran
1990s 1. Ghost of a Chance- Rush 2. Is it like today- World Party
2000s 1. Run to the Water- Live 2. Over Tokyo- Collective Soul

By filling this out, I feel like taking a Library 160 exam drunk....you know there's no way to possibly screw up, but yet there's no possible way you should be right either....
1960s: "I Want You Back" by Jackson 5
1970s: "Ohio" by CSNY
1980s: "Sweet Child O Mine" by GnR
1990s: "Cherub Rock" by Smashing Pumpkins (honorable mention for "Race for the Prize" by The Flaming Lips (live, with confetti everywhere ), barely sneaking into the 1990s....I had to look it up to be sure
2000s: "Clocks" by Coldplay
Thanks for destroying my afternoon....picking one song is so hard...
