Re: Stock recommendations

What about alternative energy stocks? Who would benefit from solar, nuclear, wind, etc.? What about the company that is the only producer of a certain kind of part that fits inside of a turbine? I've seen a ton of those things going down the interstate.

Just throwing out ideas.

Re: Stock recommendations

In the short term, with a weakening dollar, gold companies have been doing well.

Except the dollar has been strong over the last couple of weeks and gold has plummeted.

Re: Stock recommendations

Energy plays and Metals are performing very well right now.
Also look for stocks that pay healthy dividends.
Some tickers to investigate:
NUE
FSLR
X
CPU
MEA

I see an increased pressure on the steel industry, as well as alternative energies, like solar, to do well.

I think Visa would be a solid buy at this point, and worth researching. Discover has gained something like 400% since its IPO. And Visa has been going up since its IPO. I think it would be a great stock to have in the future.

Re: Stock recommendations

Captial Source (CSE) looks like a nice mid-term contrarian play (with a big dividend).

Re: Stock recommendations

I'll second the Activision recommendation. I bought on Aug 2, 2006 and it was $12. It's up around 32 now and they are merging with Blizzard so they will be the largest gaming company. Gaming hasn't taken a hit from the recent down trend in the economy. Sales are still strong. Also check out nintendo (NTDOY.pk). It's traded through the OTC but I think it's undervalued right now and Nintendo is dominating software and hardware sales.

Another Stock that has been good to me has been Elan. Bought at 6.75 and it's at 27. They are a pharmaceutical company that has the most effective Multiple Sclerosis drug. Although several years ago, they took the drug off of the market because a couple people died in one of their trials. It got reapproved and is back on the market. They also are one of the leaders in Alzheimers research and have a couple of drugs in trials right now. If one of these proves to be effective, the stock will rise significantly but if the results are bad, it will tank. It's a very risky stock.

Definitely do your own homework and don't listen to analysts blindly. They've been saying to sell elan since it dropped to 3 dollars

Re: Stock recommendations

How about finiancial companies? C, WM, MBI, UYG, etc

These stocks have been beaten down badly recently, and every one (Buffect, Greenspan etc) all say the worst time of subprime has passes. And if you look at their earnings this quarter , they still suffer big loses, but all improved from 4Q 2007

Re: Stock recommendations

My best short term buy/sell on a stock was the old Engineering Animation (EAII). Bought 1000 shares at 42, sold entire lot 2 months later at 62. The stock then peaked at 71 and then bottomed out big time. VERY happy with the 20k on a risky investment.

Worst short term buy/sell was Amazon.com. I was tired of watching Yahoo go up 30 pts everyday so I decided to 'get in' on the Internet boom right when it peaked. Luckily I didn't have that many shares, but still lost a few thousand.

Pretty much stick to mutual funds & muni bonds now. Only individual stock I own is my companies and that is because I have no choice as my 401k contribution is matched $.50 on the $1 in company stock.
