I know this thread has been dead for awhile, but I am in the middle of C. Vivian Stringer's book "Standing Tall: A Memoir of Tragedy and Triumph." I would highly recommend this to anyone. It makes me look back and realize how easy I have had it compared to other people (including her).

Some of her stories are pretty incredible. It does talk a lot about Iowa, but I can get past that because of how much respect I have for her now!
