Track help

I'm not in track, but I have several friends who are, including Casey Robertson, a senior who finished second at state xc, and Sam Chaney, a soph who is really fast. My question is this:
How good is a 4:34.86 1600 for a Sophomore? Is he major college material? Thanks.

Looking at previous IHSAA results, he may need to get his time under 4:20 for 1,600.

Dan Taylor (Fort Dodge) ran at ISU, clocked a 4:16.7 at the '02 State meet.
Logan Gonzales (Boone) is at Texas. He ran a 4:16.2 in 2005.
Stephen Dak (Marshalltown) is at Iowa Central. He won back-to-back years in '06 and '07 with a 4:17.9 and a 4:16.9.

The college distance is 1,500 meters. 15 athletes at the Big 12 Championships ran under 4:00 (in Boulder, CO). The NCAA regional qualifying standard is 3:53 and change.

I wouldn't say major college material. He would probably need to be quite a bit under 4:20 in order to get some major colleges looking at him.

He'd be right in line for a D3-type school. 4:05 won the Iowa conference 1500 this year and 3:50 qualifies a guy for nationals.

Talking to him today, he says he could have ran 10 seconds faster, but he was boxed in for most of the race, then slowed 10 yards too soon because he mistook the finish line.

4:34 will put him at any small school in Iowa...not D1 talent however. I also don't think some people realize how hard it is to run 10 seconds faster. I'm not saying he couldn't have ran 10 seconds faster, but the likelihood of that is small. Huge different between 4:24 and 4:34.

He might have trouble qualifying academically if he mistook the finish line

Nah a 4:34 is good for a sophomore, but he'd need to do a lot of work to get it down where he needs for a D1 scholly. Is he already pretty developed and strong or do you think he has some growing to do still? The nice thing with track is that he could actually get some offers senior year if he pulled off some great times. A friend of mine didn't have any offers until right after state his senior year and ended up getting one from ISU.

Why were talking about track, a kid I was friends with back in high school came to Iowa State to throw discus and he was here until they got rid of their track coaches so he transferred to UK and he won the SEC Discus with a toss of 198 and change this weekend. He currently has I think the 3rd longest toss in the nation and has qualified for olympic trials in a non-sanctioned meet.

If he is just a sophomore, he has time. By the time he is a senior, his event might have changed. It is too early to worry about things like college just yet.
Just make sure he doesn't overtrain.

Hopefully he's more than just "book" smart! lol!

That's a pretty decent time for a soph. For most sophs, they haven't yet realized what it's all about. That seems to be on par with what Gonzales did as a soph.
