Just a guess. They probably knew he was on drugs when they traded him.

This is Independent League, chances are this guy requested the trade or said he was quitting...

No. He had a record and they wouldnt let him into Canada. The team had no real use for him and certainly could have released him. As it was they took a route that although they said wasnt meant to embarras the player, certainly did. This kid had some deamons though without this unfortunate issue.
