The tastings can gt expensive but if you do some savy internet browsing you usually can find several 2for1 coupons etc. Really worth after 2 to 3 days going to different wineries.

Do the wineries out there not give you free tastings if you buy a couple of bottles? The GF and I went on a few wine tastings with my buddy and his wife in New Mexico and they gave us free wine tastings so long as we bought bottles of wine. Worked in their favor, as the GF (and buddy's wife) is a total wino.

A lot of them used to have free tastings and some even had free tours, but all things change with the times. I guess they figured there was money to be made and the cost would not necessarily hurt business. If you're in Napa Valley, they're probably figuring that you'll fork over some cash to taste their stuff regardless. There has to be at least a handful of places that will let you taste for free, but there's no guarantee that the wines are any good. Hopefully there are more places that don't charge than I think, but in a touristy area, it seems unlikely at this point.
All people who make sweepingly generalized, stupid, uninformed comments are idiots.
I live about an hour south of Napa. The lady in the office next to me commutes daily from Napa. If you are serious about wanting to know where to go, PM me and I can ask her advice. She gave me a map the last time I went up there and showed me how to avoid the traffic congestions spots.
