Time to buy a sports car?
I was just thinking the other day how this may be the best time to buy a sports car. The big boys like Corvette, Nissan GT-R, 911, Mustang are all producing huge horsepower numbers like we've never seen before.
I understand this is a different time but the last time we had an oil crisis you saw these horsepower numbers come crashing down within just a couple of years. Looking back, those American muscle cars produced between 64-70 are now worth a mint.
So if you have an extra $40K+ laying around, it may be time to buy. -
Re: Time to buy a sports car?
The problem is they suck up gas at a rate that is close to an SUV. The new car I want has a 290 HP engine for a sedan? Why? 200 is more than enough.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Benjamin Franklin 1775 -
Re: Time to buy a sports car?
Because you shouldn't have a Corvette as an every day driver. On top of that, a Corvette gets pretty good gas mileage on the interstate. I believe it's close to 30mpg.

Re: Time to buy a sports car?
I bought a sports car just last summer and it was already easier to make a good deal because of gas prices. I'm sure it will be getting even easier.

Re: Time to buy a sports car?
My 2007 Monte Carlo SS has a 303HP V8 but it is a gas hog in town. Probably get about 17MPG in town on average. Can get mid to high 20's on the highway, depending on the terrain and how fast you are going. It has active fuel management which drops it into 4 cyclinder mode when it doesn't need all the added power but you need a flat stretch of highway and not going 80 MPH to keep it in 4 cyclinder mode for extended stretches to get the higher end of the fuel economy out of it.

Re: Time to buy a sports car?
Bob Brown Chevy along Merle Hay in Des Moines had five Corvettes lined up facing the street last time I drove by a few days ago. Each had a giant sale sign hanging off the rearview mirror. I have a feeling they're not moving real fast.

If I only had the money......
It's like the Plymouth Superbird/Dodge Daytona. They could hardly give them away. Now they are 1/2 million dollar cars.

Re: Time to buy a sports car?
We're at the end of the second horse power war. With the rise in oil prices and new CAFE regulations looming, now is the time to buy if you want a truly powerful car.
Like the origional Challenger, I predict that there will only be one generation of this version. I hope to pick up an R/T with the six speed manual when it's at the end of it's life cycle in three or four years. By then nobody but the rich or stupid (me) will want a 380 horsepower coupe. I'll be able to pick one up cheep.

Re: Time to buy a sports car?
The muscle car will be pretty much dead once the new regulations kick in. So yes, buy one now, buy a ZR-1 Corvette...the greatest sports car ever built.

Re: Time to buy a sports car?
We have a German-spec Mercedes SLK Kompressor on our block that is for sale. Only EUR 9000. Not EPA or DOT legal for the US, but I am oh, so tempted to buy it, every time I jog past it.

Re: Time to buy a sports car?
I have a 911 now and it is fun to drive. Actually i am going to look at a Cayenne next week (basically a sports car that i can drive in the winter too)!

Re: Time to buy a sports car?
Even though the Cayenne is a great vehicle, it saddened me when Porsche decided to build it. I hope Ferrari never decides to do anything like this.
I've also heard that Porsche is looking at building a sedan.

I've also heard that Porsche is looking at building a sedan. I was sad when they starting putting radiators in their cars, I was devestated when they decided to cater to snobby soccer moms.
