Official Storm Thread for Thursday 6/5/08

All severe weather discussions for today can go here to let everybody stay up to date on the wacky weather.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

OK...I know things are a little different in Texas than in the rest of the country, but our calendars say that today is 6/5...

More storms threatening Midlands
BY CHELSEA KEENEY
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Nebraska
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado for Gosper and Phelps counties until 11:15 p.m.

A thunderstorm warning for southwest Nebraska is ineffct until 11:45 p.m.

* * *

Another wave of storms is expected to crash into Nebraska and southwest Iowa this afternoon.

A cold front approaching from the west will meet warm, moist air, creating the potential for severe weather from the afternoon into the evening, said Carl Erickson, a meteorologist with AccuWeather, The World-Herald's private weather consultant.

"During the day Thursday, the entire state is fair game, with emphasis in central and eastern Nebraska," Erickson said.

He said the Panhandle could see some severe storms but was more likely to get rain.

In Omaha and southwest Iowa, the middle of the day will be sunny and humid — setting the stage for stormy conditions, Erickson said.

Scott Dergan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said a squall line, which is a set of fast-moving thunderstorms, should develop over central Nebraska about 4 p.m.

"They will race east, probably reaching Lincoln and West Point by 7 p.m. and Omaha just after 7," he said.

Dergan said western Iowa would see the same batch of storms after 8 p.m.

Erickson said the cold front will be lined up over central Nebraska and western Kansas and could bring large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.

Dergan said areas west of Ainsworth and Kearney were not as threatened by severe weather as the rest of the state.

The ground remains saturated from last week's rains, he said, and rivers and creeks are running high, making flooding a possibility.

After a turbulent Thursday, Friday should be quiet, with temperatures in the low 80s.

"Maybe a lingering shower," Erickson said, "but the bulk of Friday is a dry day."

EIU is the other Okoboji University for serious students and home of Captain Kirk who pilots the Enterprise on its Trek through the Universe for finding his next great job. Captain, beware of your Superbowl.

That's what she said.

This is what weather.com says for up here. What is being expected in central Iowa?

Strong thunderstorms likely. Damaging winds, large hail, and possibly a tornado with some storms.

It is kinda odd that one is allowed, but "credit whore" has been a widely used phrase 'round these parts - ever since keep rigged a weather bet in order to "earn" himself some credits.
