In Columbus Junction, where the Cedar and the Iowa join together, our flooding right now is predicted to be 1.5 feet worse than the flood of '93, and the flood of '93 was pretty darn bad. We are moving as much as we can out of my Dad's vet clinic right now.

I was out sandbagging in Palo all day today, but the city doesn't have enough bags to give to residents or businesses to protect their properties. Tomorrow I am going to have to get some plastic and a ton of sand to make a wall 3 foot high around a 2 acre property to protect our tennants belongings.

It's pretty wild up here in Waterloo. I've never seen the river this high. Thank goodness they built the extensive levee system up here after the city nearly floated away in the 60's.

Thanks to one of my roommate's friends recommendation we tailgated in the Haunted forest lot all last year. Not quite as nutty as the student lots but much easier to get out of, the same price, and it's all grass. only downside is that there are much fewer porta-johns. Plus we parked there at about 1 am the morning of the Iowa Game.

Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to make it to any of the games. Hopefully we get some on TV this year.

I'm far from an expert when it comes to engineering, but wouldn't this create more problems downstream?

Well what several other businesses are doing is take 20 foot wide by 100 foot rolls of plastic and dumping sand in them 3 foot high. Then toping it off with something heavy.

We have a skid loader to dump the sand on the plastic, and since we couldn't get sandbags we bought about 1000 trashbags to use on the top.

Worst part of all this is, we are not in the floodplain so we have no flood insurance, which alot of the newer homes around our location are in the same boat.

Yeah I think I've read that it does make the water a bit higher than it would be immediatly before and after the levee systems. However in this part of the world you're talking mostly farm fields so it's the lesser of two evils when you consider the population densities of urban vs. rural.
