Re: Flooding Updates for 6/10
At this point, Des Moines Water Works is not in danger of shutting down. The water is 3 foot high on a 14 foot high levee.

Spillway will start releasing water sometime within the next 24 hours, and flood downtown Des Moines (according to channel 13).

Re: Flooding Updates for 6/10
I heard another two feet of water will come out of the spill way. Not sure how far/much that will flood, but basically that sounds like whats coming. If I had to guess, that would be anything less than two feet of elevation above the current water mark.

They haven't been talking about Red Rock at all - have they had to open the flood gates down there?

Re: Flooding Updates for 6/10
Channel 13 just said the water is not expected to go over the levee. It's currently 10 ft from the top of the levee, they expect another few feet. Thankfully everyone is taking all the precautions downtown.

Re: Flooding Updates for 6/10
After all the work they have done downtown, especially court ave, it would be a real shame to have serious flooding down there...

Re: Flooding Updates for 6/10
sounds like there could be a 2nd round. Parts of NC iowa are "supposed" to get 6 inches of rain tomorrow night. Although those areas were drained by the Iowa River watershed, the Des Moines watershed is looking at anywhere between 1 and 3 inches, so that really isn't going to help

Well, my sump has slowed down from every minute to about every 7 minutes so the last day or so has helped alot... I just really hope the sewers dont back up...

Re: Flooding Updates for 6/10
Ames might take it hard again. Looks like alot of the heaviest rain tomorrow night will fall right into the Skunk River basin, as well as the Iowa.

Re: Flooding Updates for 6/10
The latest updates show about 4.75 inches of rain in north central Iowa tomorrow night, according to NOAA. Saylorville is to start pouring over between 10pm and midnight tonight and it will take around 12 hours for that water to start hitting DSM. Once it does, then the level will rise and get near the top of the levee in downtown DSM, or right at the top. If we get a lot of rain here in central and north central Iowa over the next 48 hours, it could get real ugly.
A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player. -
Re: Flooding Updates for 6/10
that rain in NC iowa mostly won't affect dsm. It WILL affect communities in the Skunk and Iowa river valleys the worst, these being Ames, Marshalltown, IC. The weather in Algona, Humboldt, Ft. Dodge, etc will have the most bearing on DSM, and that doesn't look good, albeit not as bad as areas to the east of there. Hopefully the crest recedes somewhat before these rains get into the system. Good thing they are sand bagging already.

7-Day Zone Forecast for Polk County
don't know if that's been posted, should answer some questions. Looks like we got a 50/50 shot for rain tomorrow night. Hopefully the dice rolls in our favor, although we have no reason to be optimistic...
