People are beginning to see why TV stations hold onto weather coverage when severe weather is near.

Kind of outweighs losing programming or HDTV because of coverage.

This system of storms is brutal. I can't believe all of the destruction, injuries, deaths already just in Iowa so far this year. Horrible situation.

Just flat out scary. it seems worse now then in 1993 with all the flooding and weather. My thought and prayers to the families.

I'm not sure about worse then 1993 yets... I was going over the time line in 1993 and I didn't realize how many tornadoes around the state there were. Along with just a hair more rain at this point.

Although this year has been terrible for tornadoes resulting in fatalities. It's too bad that this camp and others across the state don't make underground shelters manditory. I knew many parents that wouldn't send their kids to camps like these because of that very issue.

WHO-TV is preempting Leno to go with flood and tornado coverage for a bit. They're talking to Gov. Culver live right now.

That picture was taken in Orchard (SE of Osage) on Tuesday. It's on the KIMT (Mason City TV) website.

Good find. I'll let the person who emailed it to me know the correct source of the picture.

I knew this type of talk would start up. Why the second guessing? These camps are primative and huge. Where would you put the shelter, assuming the camp can remain open after paying for it?

This particular camp is 1,600 acres - that is like 2.5 square miles.

What would you reccomend several shelters all evenly spread out?

Then what about non-tornado dangers like lightening?

I have been through similar weather with my scouts at mitigwa and you just take all the precautions you can and try to be as prudent as possible, but it is impossible to do everything possible to be entirely safe.

These leaders are second guessing themselves enough right now, they do not need some keyboard quarterback piling on.

Re: Tornado Hits Boy Scout Camp in Western Iowa

This story breaks my heart. I got an email about it this morning before I went in to work, and I had to stop what I was doing and collect myself. As an eagle scout who has been on more camping trips than I can remember, this is the scariest thing I can possibly imagine. I feel sick just thinking about this horrific event. "Tragic" is a laughable excuse of a description for what happened. This is devastating.

If anyone knows of a way to donate to the relief effort please do not hesitate PM me. If I weren't in MN for the summer with a full time job I would be on my way there to volunteer right now.

Amen. You just can't guard against everything. These folks aren't negligent. I can't imagine what it would truly take to build the shelters that would be necessary, and to maintain them, since they won't maintain themselves.

I'll pray for the comfort of these folks and their families. Families are probably blaming themselves and torturing themselves right now. I know I used this phrase already, but I can't imagine getting the phone call that my son is dead (I don't have one), but I know that I would have a lot of questions, and most of them would start with me.

They need comfort much more than correction.

The 14-year-old killed is from Eagle Grove in North Central Iowa. He was an only child. Please say prayers for his parents and family. Thank you.

My wife is the program director at the 4-H camp south of Boone. There is just no way they could afford to put in storm shelters that would be big enough to accommodate the number of people that could be out there at once. They just don't have the money.
