Re: Tornado Hits Boy Scout Camp in Western Iowa

No use second guessing. If the 6 people in Parkersburg would have been at Boy Scout camp a couple weeks ago they would still be alive.

Yes, I know mostly older people died in Parkersburg.

Re: Tornado Hits Boy Scout Camp in Western Iowa

I just got off the phone with a customer of mine up in NW Iowa and a neighbor living 2 miles from him has a son that came home from college to help him out with some chores and work around the farm. They were outside doing some work side by side when the son was struck by lightning and died. I sure hope this weather calms down soon.

Dated 1/20/2009: Question for the day: Can I still make season tickets work for FB and MBB if I move to Canada?

I think I know who you're talking about. He was a former staff member for my wife at the 4-H camp. A real shame, he was a great kid. As I heard it, they hadn't even seen any lightning yet, and they were carrying a 2x4 with his dad in front. His dad heard a pop and turned around to see his son laying on the ground. I guess his dad is an EMT, but there wasn't anything he could do.

To be ISU-junior (mechanical engineering I believe) Galen Smith from Curlew? Very sad news

I didn't hear a name but this guy farms around Curlew and he said his dad was a first responder who worked on him till the ambulance got there so I'm sure we are talking about the same guy.

Thinking about stuff like that and thinking about my own kids just gives you the feeling like someone is ripping your heart right out of your chest.

From the KICD radio website (Spencer):

Wednesday, 11 June, 2008 09:52 PM
(Curlew, IA)--Palo Alto county sheriff's officers say a rural Curlew man was killed by lightning this [Wednesday] morning.
Sheriff Dennis Goeders says 20 year old Galen F. Smith was found unresponsive around 9:30 this morning.
Ambulance crews took Smith to the Palo Alto county hospital where he was pronounced dead. Smith was a mechanical engineering student at Iowa State University.
Authorities say he was helping his father in the yard at the time of the strike.
