They say that you can judge someone's character by how they treat you when you can do them no good: Outgoing dean regrets remarks made in interview [with video] - News
If you change jobs just leave and be glad they cant follow you. And when you consider new employment scratch up a list of things that you need/want to have to get by with. If the job/place doesn't fit "don't go there" in the first place.

Thanks for the link Transient. This has been the talk of the campus the last few days. Yesterday, a department chair at ISU, also a big Cyclone fan, told me that Pollard is livid about the "big time football" comment on the list - and has or will be contacting Achterberg himself before she leaves town. She came here from Penn State (one of Geoffrey's old buddies).
The same department chair told me she was "asked to leave, and to look for new opportunities" a few months ago...

Hmm maybe a personal note to her is in order, especially to the fine folks at Ohio State too.

Thought I'd throw this out there. I considered tOSU in my college search, and I clearly remember crossing them off my list after visiting and the faculty member I met with wouldn't shut up about his research, the advisor kept talking about the research she was doing, and a good chunk of the "prospective students" Q & A session talked about--yep, you guessed it--research. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for research and advancements, but not at the expense of the students paying for an education. I got the feeling that the people in the dept I was interested in were more concerned about their research than teaching students.
Just my $.02 on the situation.

Cant argue with a few things she said, but she doesnt need to bad mouth Ames and ISU. Why not talk about the positives of OSU. Good riddance.

Lesson learned a long time ago - never burn bridges. You have nothing to gain from it and you never know when you'll need help/run into a situation where a past employment comes in handy.

I wince when new employees bad mouth their previous employment. It really puts a bad taste in my mouth and it sets off red flags for me regarding the type of person they might be.
It usually becomes clear within weeks or months of their new employment that THEY were probably a bigger part of the problem, not the employer or colleagues.
That said, I'm surprised how uncomfortable and inarticulate she seems in front of this group.

Can't get it to download, for some reason. But, I'm assuming she's some "academic" who trashes ISU because they aren't freakishly PC enough for her?
I tell you, academics just tick me off. I have never met a group of more narrow-minded bigoted, frankly STUPID people in my life. Most academics qualify under the "couldn't pour pee out of a boot with the instructions on the heel" category, as far as I'm concerned.
As recently as 6 months ago, I was seriously considering becoming one, too... |

She is the now former Dean of the College of Human Sciences, and has taken a similar position at tOSU.

When the word research is stated, OSU does not come to my mind. What do they research at OSU? Politics? Frats? Rust Belt economics?

I guess if i was the interviewer i would see her "top ten" list as "these are the reasons i don't like my current job" but what makes you think that if she was to leave tOSU she wouldn't do it again. And if size matters, then what does Harvard, Duke and Standford have to offer? Because tOSU is huge school compared to most.

I wouldn't want to tick off my previous employer. I especially would not want to tick off Jamie Pollard.
