Re: Getting Older

City Slickers (1991) - Memorable quotes

Value this time in your life kids, because this is the time in your life when you still have your choices, and it goes by so quickly. When you're a teenager you think you can do anything, and you do. Your twenties are a blur. Your thirties, you raise your family, you make a little money and you think to yourself, "What happened to my twenties?" Your forties, you grow a little pot belly you grow another chin. The music starts to get too loud and one of your old girlfriends from high school becomes a grandmother. Your fifties you have a minor surgery. You'll call it a procedure, but it's a surgery. Your sixties you have a major surgery, the music is still loud but it doesn't matter because you can't hear it anyway. Seventies, you and the wife retire to Fort Lauderdale, you start eating dinner at two, lunch around ten, breakfast the night before. And you spend most of your time wandering around malls looking for the ultimate in soft yogurt and muttering "how come the kids don't call?" By your eighties, you've had a major stroke, and you end up babbling to some Jamaican nurse who your wife can't stand but who you call mama. Any questions?

I'll stay young forever if that's the criteria.

Re: Getting Older

36 here. Enjoy your twenties while you have them. Age and time committments change things. When I was 26 I worked out three days during the week and every Saturday and Sunday consisted of surfing 2-3 hours and immediately heading to the courts for about 3 hours of beach volleyball.

I still play about 6-8 hours of volleyball each weekend but I can't go back to back with surfing like I use to. I still play at about the same level, but I'm getting by more and more off skill and savvy than from my vertical (I hope that changes when I have a torn meniscus repaired). I surf when I have time, but with two kids (one less than a month old) that time is becoming more difficult to find.

One piece of advice, if you have an injury take care of it. I injured my shoulder and didn't follow PT like I should have and it kept me on the sidelines for a few years. I'd like to have those years back.

Re: Getting Older

George Carlin on age.
(Absolutely Brilliant)

IF YOU DON'T READ THIS TO THE VERY END, YOU HAVE LOST A DAY IN YOUR LIFE. AND WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED, DO AS I AM DOING AND SEND IT ON.

George Carlin's Views on Aging

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions.

'How old are you?' 'I'm four and a half!' You're never thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on five! That's the key

You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead.

'How old are you?' 'I'm gonna be 16!' You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life . . . You become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony. YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're Just a sour-dumpling. What's wrong? What's changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone.

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.

You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!

You get into your 80's and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30 ; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; 'I Was JUST 92.'

Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. 'I'm 100 and a half!'
May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

HOW TO STAY YOUNG
1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay 'them.'

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3 . Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. 'An idle mind is the devil's workshop.' And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love , whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER :
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, butby the moments that take our breath away.

Question for the day: Can I still make season tickets work for FB and MBB if I move to Canada?

Mentally, he is still "there" to the point that he can carry on a pretty good conversation, but will repete himself several times.
He said something that stuck with me though, and that was "getting old ain't easy, even after a lot of practice"
I've been thinking about getting old quite a bit, especially as I creep closer to the dreaded 30.
I'm noticing already that some things don't come as easily as they used to, mainly recovery after working out. I hang out at the bar with a group of guys in their mid 40's, and they don't seem so old. A 21-year old woman sounds pretty young to me now, and when I make references to movies that were popular when I was in high school, some guys that I coach haven't even heard of the movie.
My question is how is age treating everyone. I know we have a wide variety of people on this board. Anything you miss being able to do? Being able to get away with? Maybe you love getting older. I don't mind it, but being in that nursing home made me realize we aren't young forever.
My birthday was Sunday as well, turned 35. Other than for my boss, all of my co-workers in my dept. are in their low & mid 20's...makes me feel old.

I find that pretty humorous as well. I'll be 50 next month.

The only thing that bothers me is I can't eat like I used to. I look at food and feel like I gained weight.

What makes me feel old is seeing High School kids in letter jackets that say 2012 or something. Never good.

I'm 44 and I never went to the hospital until 2 years ago. The biggest change that still need to make is my diet. I just can't eat like I did when I was in my 20s. I did pick up Eat This Not That. The main part of book helps makes healthier choices for fast food (I haven't been to one in 2 years) and chain restaurants if you have to dine out. There is also a section for decoding restaurant menus and even a section for supermarket shopping and choosing a 'healthier" beer.

I still work out every day. However it can be rather frustrating. I always tell people that I see women in their 20s hop on an elliptical, start going 8-9 mph and have conversations with each other while I'm sweating and struggling at 6-7 mph. And if someone tries to talk to me the best I can do is 2-word sentences. At this point in my life everyone seems like they are faster and stronger than me.

I just had a torn meniscus repaired. First injury I've ever had that required surgery. Man does it suck! My leg has been in a brace for a month, I'm going crazy. Years of skiing, soccer, volleyball, etc.. I'm dying to get back to activity again. I've listened to everything the Dr has told me to do, and am so looking forward to PT. I can't get rid of these crutches soon enough.

You've been in a brace for a month? I guess I have some things to learn about this procudure. Did they repair your tear, or just trim the ragged edges?

Re: Getting Older

I'm older than most, younger than a few who've posted on this thread and admitted their age. The biggest aging drawback to me happened a few years ago when my daughter was in high school. Something had happened (don't even remember what, now) that made me think "next time we'll get it right." And then I realized that there are no do-overs, no instant replays or"what-if we do it this way next time" in life. Kind of sobering if you think too much about it.
I think it's always better to be adding years than counting down what you have left.
Besides, there was no CF when I graduated from college. Now my life's complete :)
