I know a lot of people that were charged for illegal downloading at ISU. some people up to $30,000 for all the movies and songs they had on their computer!

Not if you first burn your iTunes music as an audio CD and then re-rip them as MP3s.

And I created an entire "Guitar Hero" album in that fashion - it doesn't sound any worse than the original iTunes files.

The rip/re-rip thing is an inconvenience, but the big problem I have with iTunes is that most of their stuff is encoded at 128 kbps, which I consider to be near the "complete crap" end of the quality scale. 128 kbps is tolerable if all you want to do is listen through an iPod with earbuds, but I personally notice significant quality degredation when playing 128 kbps stuff on my stereo equipment and in my vehicle.

Amazon.com music is encoded at 256 kbps, which is much better. I think iTunes is now offering higher quality downloads, but they don't have a very big catalog of the high quality stuff.

Question:
If you download the music but never share it is the fine less?

I thought they were going after the servers where people were sharing the music. I use to take it out of the shared folder as soon as it was downloaded to avoid this.

Plus I was thinking of Strange Search at ISU. Does anyone else remember this?

They really want her to pay $80 per song? That's the real crime.

That is the cost of their legal fees too. Some people thus challenged never pay and they have to distribute the fees to the payers. I believe 30,000 people includsing grannies have been drug into the mud so far buy the music industry. The Chinese foreigners are pretty much untouchable however.

Ah yes Strange Search I think you are right. As far as sharing the files, I have heard the same thing and always take it out of the shared folder too.

Walmart.com has decent music downloads. They don't have a ton of artists. Some artists boycott the DRM free downloads. But, I believe, everything from Walmart is DRM free and it also lists the kbps so you know what quality you are buying.

The only problem I have with them is that I despise Walmart. But, if something is done right, I'm a customer. And they have me on the music.
