While the wireless guitar was a nice addition, it was pretty obvious that Neversoft was far more interested in cashing in on the Guitar Hero name than it was on producing a great game. Harmonix, on the other hand went on to produce Rock Band which, in my opinion, is the defining game in the genre. Tons of customization options, much more depth, more instruments, etc. One really only needs to look at the number of additional songs available for download on Rock Band and compare it to those available for Guitar Hero. RB comes out with at least 3 new songs every week, sometimes more. GH gets Velvet Revolver. Nuff said.
1. Nothing wrong with Velvet Revolver
2. The entire downloadable list for GHIII: List of songs in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
3. I'm not saying Rock Band ISN'T better (no experience with it), but I kind of liked how Guitar Hero focuses on just the guitar and I'm a little disappointed that they're adding in the other instruments in one of the next installments.

for point of reference, while GH3 has about 110 songs available including the downloadable ones, Rock Band has around 180, and this number increases by at least 3 every week. New releases are less frequent for GH. Don't get me wrong, I liked GH3 a lot. My wife and I played it a lot. But, to me, Rock Band is considerably more entertaining.

And like I said, I have no experience with Rock Band, nor will I probably simply because I could probably never talk my wife into 4 guitars, 2 drumsets, and two mics just so I can play both games. I'm having a difficult enough time trying to get my wife to learn the game. That and I haven't made it through the 110 songs yet (I just don't get to play it that often).

Re: Guitar Hero

A few points:

If you buy the GH games for the PS2, you won't be able to take advantage of any of the new/downloadable material for say GH3 on the PS3.

Also I don't know for sure if the wired GH controllers for the PS2 work on the PS3 since the PS3 has no controller slots, you would have to buy a USB to PS2 controller adapter, I know that these exist.

If you buy any PS3 controllers, they will not work on the PS2 GH games, which really sucks.

The PS3 controllers are horridly messed up. For whatever reason, Harmonix/Activision was not/did not create bluetooth controllers (this is the native communication for the PS3). They just made still infrared controllers and you have this stupid dongle that has to be plugged into your PS3 in order to play GH. The GH controller also will not work with Rock Band/ vice-versa (but Rock Band sucks anyway ).

Another thing, which you may not make much notice of until you get into Expert songs is that the PS3 controllers have an absolutely unbearable delay to them. When you see the note cross the screen, the controller does not sense this. There can be anywhere from a 10 to 500 ms difference in this, which makes songs such as Raining Blood impossible......*breathe*

All in all, I wouldn't buy Guitar Hero for the PS3 again, and am continuing to contemplate buying another PS2 so that I can play GH on there. I've got a whole pile of PS2 parts in my apartment because I attempted to scrap together 3 non-functioning PS2s before I broke down and bought a PS3. Anyone want a bunch of lasers by the way?

Saying there isn't a good library of games for PS3 now is just ignorant. Most of the games are out on each system, and the PS3 exclusive list keeps growing. Plus if you have an HD T.V., the Blu-Ray playback is a MUST!

By the way..I got Metal Gear Solid 4 the day it came out, it is by far and away the best game I've EVER played.

And...just to keep this post relevant to the thread...Rock Band kicks a$$. Plus the PS3 has an integrated Rock Band store within the game. Pretty cool.

OK. So for now, for my most bang for my buck, I think I'll buy GHIII and one wireless controller for the PS2. That should be hours of enjoyment, right?

I'd say absolutely! The original GH in my opinion has the best soundtrack, but III is good as well. If you want to buy a wireless controller, just be sure to try and find some reviews on it. I know that everyone has a story about how their wireless controller sucks but there definitely are some out there that do not perform as well as others

Best Buy has a game and wireless controller combo pack. Mixed reveiws on the controller, though. Sometimes, when dealing this technology, I wonder how many people are just too dumb to work the thing and then rate it low.

I've definitely read more than a few of
This controller doesn't ever work I push the buttons but fail every song!
Really the only thing to note is that the controller is going to operate at the 2.4GHz that pretty much all wireless technologies run on. So the more routers and cordless phones you have around, the more interference you're going to experience. Make sure you've got a clear shot from the controller to the receiver as well

Exactly my point, most games come out for both systems and to date the multiplatform games have looked/played as well or better on Microsoft's supposedly "inferior" machine. NCAA Football 08, anyone? Why would I buy a more expensive machine for games that aren't any better, and in some cases worse? Throw in the fact that Microsoft has a fantastic library of exclusives and it makes the decision a lot easier.

That being said, I do think there are some good exclusives for the PS3. Resistance, Uncharted, and Motorstorm, to name a few. I will not pass judgement on MGS4, as I have not played it yet.

Consider buying a REAL guitar and learning to play it. If you are that motivated to rock out perhaps you will learn to play and end up gaining a life time of enjoyment out of music instead of using your time to play a freakin video game.
Some people enjoy freakin video games more. Nothing wrong with that.

Re: Guitar Hero

I did a total 180 on this topic today -- And ordered the Rockband Special Edition Combo Pack as suggested by Dmclone. I did more research and I think this game is more likely to get my wife and visitors involved and playing for something to do at social occasions. I haven't told her I bought it. I'm just going to wait for it to show up on our doorstep and tell her I bought "us" a present. I know once she sees there is a drum set and guitar, she'll be in love with the game.
