26 years

26 years of active service (both Active Duty and Active Reserve) come to an end tomorrow, for me.

Tomorrow, July 1, I am offically transferring to the Inactive Ready Reserve.

Oddly enough, I left because my Reserve duty was getting in the way of my full-time civilian job of training soldiers to go to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Africa. I may be the first guy ever who quit the Army in order to devote more time to the military.

It's truly a strange world.

And it's definitely not the Army I joined. When I joined, we had black boots, OG507 green field uniforms (WITH shiny gold buckle, of course!!!), M1911 pistols and M3 submachineguns. We still had three-prong flash hider M16s, in our unit. Oh, yes. And jeeps. And "C" rations.

Now, 26 years later, I can do roughly double the amount of pullups and about the same on my PT test (max, of course).

Just the other day, I was on the 11th mile of a fun run and completely smoked a group of 18-20 somethings on the second mile of their PT test. I'm talking start 1/4 mile behind them and finish 1/4 mile ahead of them kind of smoking....

Not bad for an old guy who had to lie about a broken back and almost didn't get enlisted because of a bad knee, hmmm?
