This weekend our family got a pass at the local pool, and they have a 50m lap pool, in addition to a diving pool and a wave pool.
Back in the day, I used to swim long distance for exercise, so I swam 1600 meters.
I had forgotten how good it feels to swim long distance: I have never had a form of exercise that brought such a euphoric state.
Does anyone else swim long distance for exercise? I'm interested in othe peoples' experience and tips. I need to get a good set of goggles, and possibly ear plugs, I think, if I'm going to do this further....
I've done a bit of open ocean swimming, nothing compares for exercise. Used goggles, never had a need for earplugs. I did use hand paddles for the added resistance, great for the upper body.
All things flow according to the whims of the great magnet.
"You know, that might be the answer - to act boastfully about something we ought to be ashamed of. That's a trick that never seems to fail."
Freshman and Sophomore year of HS yeah, I swam the 500 free so we'd have practices swimming 1000 with some regularity. I'll agree with the euphoric state but the time between 500-750 yards seems like it'll never end.
I was a distance swimmer back in my day to the point where I was entertaining swimming the English Channel. Never happened, but I've done some open water swims. My advice would be to get some good comfortable googles, and that is all you really need. Paddles and pull buoys are OK to switch it up a bit. I always felt that a good habit to get into if you are doing some distance swimming is to get in the habit of alternate breathing. But really just keep getting in the water and enjoy yourself.
