    Who wants a butter Johnson?

Isn't this just kind of creepy? Butter sculptures of cows are odd enough, but of people?

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

I think its cool. Why dwell on all the bad happening all the time? We have something positive happening here in what she has the chance to do so why not celebrate it?

Re: Who wants a butter Johnson?

Personally, as someone out of state that is still hearing a lot of hype about her, I think it's all warranted. As for the butter Johnson, I think any likeness carved into butter is rediculous, but she deserves it at least as much as that kid from Norwalk who played Superman.

I think her story is tremendous - and gives the state a great lift. The fact that she is so grounded and humble - one of the rare gymasts that still attends public school, for pete's sake. She is the gymnastics version of Cael Sanderson.
If that is creepy, we could use more "creepy" stories...

I forgot that they did it for the Superman guy, that too was a little odd. Of course he was wearing tights which we all now makes things even more creepy

I don't mean creepy that she's good or anything like that, just creepy that they have to make butter molds of people. Of course I never understood the butter cow so just ignore me

I think all this attention would be more warranted if she were to win some medals in the upcoming Olympics. But I'm not surprised, or annoyed, by the amount of coverage she is getting. She's at the top of her sport right now, and she's from Iowa. We don't often get that combination.

Re: Who wants a butter Johnson?

Oh, so what? Yes, there's lots of bad stuff going on in the world, but that's always been the case and always will be the case. Is that really a valid excuse to not allow ourselves to celebrate something good?

She's not just a 'good' gymnast, she is the best one in the world. Period. I love the state of Iowa with all my heart, but this is not a place that typically fosters that sort of claim. This is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, and I think it's perfectly acceptable that we're celebrating it as such. Nobody batted an eyelash last year when a butter Harry Potter was sculpted, and he's a fictional character. Johnson is a real Iowan with real accomplishments. Besides, how is the coverage of Johnson any different than coverage of other professional athletes anywhere else in the country or world? Major American metros devote nearly 100% of their sports sections to the local pro teams, usually ignoring high schools and colleges. Overseas, newspapers have entire sections on nothing but soccer. Iowa is just participating in the same level of coverage, and substituting our most applicable professional athlete. I think a 15-year old girl winning a third-straight world championship is probably deserving of a front-page article or two, especially from a small newspaper like the Register.
    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.
