Exactly what it sounds like. They grow various raw materials that, when processed, are turned into various forms of data. It's become a big moneymaker the last 15 years, considering the world's obsession with technology. We use more and more data every year, and it's hard for supply to keep up with demand.
Re: Microsoft comes to Iowa
Honestly, this won't have an overly significant impact on Iowa. Data Farms, just like regular farms, don't tend to employ that many people, and most of the tax benefits for Iowans were sold away in order to get the datacenter here in the first place.
It's not a bad thing, per se, just not that great of a thing either.

Marshalltown is building a new $3 Billion power plant in the coming years...word has it that Microsoft would want that data center near a community with a large power plant. hhhhmmmm.......

It's going to be in the Des Moines area and it will someday employ up to 200.
