Independence Day celebrations
I just thinking about my favorite Forth of July celebrations and was wondering how all of you are celebrating Independence Day?
Unfortunately, I have to work tonight, but my favorite celebration was back in my hometown where we would have a parade and then a community potluck and games. Anyone could be in the parade, and there were often more people in the parade then there were watching. Not to mention every fire department for 50 miles had a truck or two there. The line of people in the parade was actually longer then the parade route. Good times! -
Re: Independence Day celebrations
Spending it in Iowa City. I think they moved the City Park fireworks to a smaller park closer to the MU at Iowa. I'll probably be going to the Coralville fireworks, but I will probably be having to deal with a lot more mosquitos, Hawkeyes, and another annoying pests this year.
On a more serious note, this is the first time this year I've been back to IC, and the flood damage is absolutely heartbreaking. I haven't seen downtown yet, but most of the eastern Coralville businesses and shopping centers are in disarray, and they're tearing down one of the smaller shopping centers because the foundation washed away.

We're going to a Diamondbacks game tonight with fireworks after the game. Baseball, hot dogs and fireworks. "THE SKIES SHALL RAIN BLOOD AND ALL THE WORLD SHALL QUAKE IN THE SHADOW OF THE CARDINAL AND GOLD!" -

There are not many crowds or places in the country that have a better impact on the game than at Iowa State. The Cyclone fans are truly a sixth man. The place is so loud and always a fantastic crowd." - Former Kansas and current North Carolina head coach Roy Williams -

It's my 21st birthday as well.
Alcohol will be involved this weekend.

I'm currently spending a month on the Baltic Sea in Klaipeda, Lithuania. The Lithuanian's don't celebrate the 4th, obviously, but I spent the evening at the beach watching a beautiful sunset. BTW, the sun doesn't begin setting until about 10:30 pm - & even then it doesn't get too terribly dark.
I do miss the fireworks and the parades big time. Hope all of you are having an awesome 4th!

Re: Independence Day celebrations
My family and I celebrated the 4th by going back to Schweinfurt, where we first lived after getting married, by train. Then we celebrated on the way back by getting lost on the German train system, because I misread the train schedule.
Finally arrived "home" on the very last train available, after midnight.
Missed the fireword display on base, but got a lot of "together" time, which was probably better, anyway -

But you're just turning 21 now, so that means... "THE SKIES SHALL RAIN BLOOD AND ALL THE WORLD SHALL QUAKE IN THE SHADOW OF THE CARDINAL AND GOLD!" -

If any of you live in Ankeny and are over by the Southwoods Elementry and see a crap load of fireworks go off for about a good 10 min., that would be us!
Besides slow smoking a brisket for 8 hrs, bringing homemade potluck food, and having a few beverages, we top it all off with maybe the towns best fireworks show.
