A disaster guide for the Beijing Summer Olympics

A disaster guide for the Beijing Summer Olympics. - By Lucy Morrow Caldwell, Kara Hadge, Nayeli Rodriguez, and Derek Thompson - Slate Magazine

Yikes...

I might actually watch this year and I hope all goes well.

Harriet Michaels: Do you actually like haggis?
Charlie Mackenzie: No, I think it's repellent in every way. In fact, I think most Scottish cuisine is based on a dare.

Wow. It was a lot riskier than I thought allowing China to host the Olympics.

My roommate is going there for a week. If he doesn't make it back, I got dibs on his computer.

I think they are saying it would be an embarrassment because China has claimed that they are going to cause rain before it gets to Beijing...just like the article states. So the embarrassment would be that they cannot control the weather like they claimed...who knew?

I watched on the BBC last weekend their coverage of China's attempt to clear out the algae bloom that could interfere with the sailing events. In America we'd probably bring in some sort of heavy equipment to rake and clear it out, China though brings in the army and manually does it.

Some of the behind the scenes stuff may be more interesting than some of the actual events.

It sounds like they are spending alot of time, energy, and money on preventing rain... Sounds like a really good idea...

I saw an article about that stuff the other day. They were bringing in some machinery from the Navy. The problem was that it was going to take a few days to get there.

Another problem that they are having is that the algae seems to come back overnight. That could be interesting.

The other problem with the sailing venue is that there isn't a consistent wind. That could be a problem.

Yep, spend all the money they can to prevent rain but pass over the starvation prevention of its people.

Wow, what a great idea having the Olympics in China was!

Let's slate the next summer games in Fallujah and the winter games in the picturesque mountains of Afghanistan.
