Did Anybody Else Get Woken Up Last Night?
I heard this weird hum in my sleep last night. I heard it for a few seconds, it would fade away for several seconds, and then it would fade back for a few seconds again. I listened to this while half-asleep for about a minute before I realized I was hearing the tornado siren. The clock said about 3:30. I woke up my wife just in time to hear the sirens fade out for the last time. I turned on the television to see what was happening (+rep for the weather people at WHO and KCCI for being there), and there was a tornado warning. The bad stuff had just rolled past us, so there was no point in waking the kids. They were talking about 80mph winds, and we have junk blown all over our yard today. We turned the TV off, and I spent about an hour trying to go back to sleep.

Blew my pool cover from beneath the weights on the concrete. Had to be a stiff wind to do that in omaha. It has only happened three times this year.
In the Sage Rosefels Maquoketa article, the newspaper was asking for storm pictures from last night...
Re: Did Anybody Else Get Woken Up Last Night?
Wind blew over my fence last night and kept me up for most of it as well.
Re: Did Anybody Else Get Woken Up Last Night?
Yeah great freaking night to just have tarpaper on your roof huh? Stupid storm on Saturday night popped up out of nowhere and left us way behind where we needed to be on it...
Re: Did Anybody Else Get Woken Up Last Night?
Had a hard time getting to work today since my routes were all blocked off by large trees stretched across the road. We had crushed houses and cars everywhere and alot of businesses and homes are without power.
We have a tree in our backyard that is notorious for ruining our house, fence, and anything attached to either. This time it stood like a champ. May have to hug it when I get home.

I also live in Johnston. The wind woke me up at 3:15 and I heard the sirens at 3:30. Never got back to bed.
It was trash day so there are garbage cans everywhere and a lot of basketball hoops laying on the pavement. Driving downtown today there were a few traffic lights out. I was thinking that they are supposed to blink when the electricity goes out?

I was surprised Johnny Mac was on the air at 3:30. It was funny because he was saying he was not actually sure if he was on or not because it sounds like Ch8 lost power. Luckily I had just gotten my OTA antenna working again because there was no way satellite was working at that point.

I'm here in Urbandale, so the worst of it was north of us. But for some reason, the storm woke me up and I decided to turn on the TV. Just as I did that, I could hear the sirens in Johnston crank up. The winds were really gusting here.
Re: Did Anybody Else Get Woken Up Last Night?
I just had the carpet put back in my basement Friday and last night I couldn't sleep listening to all the rain pounding my window thinking about the possibility of doing it all over again. Fortunately the basement is dry this morning but I'm tired:smile:
Re: Did Anybody Else Get Woken Up Last Night?
I lost 4 trees, my entire backyard wood fence, shingles from my roof. I have no idea where my deck furniture or garbage cans are.
Yeah, I woke up.

Somebody needs a weather radio...sersiously...
This happened to me back around 2000. A hail storm had finished passing through about midnight. I stuck my head outside, saw the stars, the radar on TV was pretty clear, so I went to bed. About 1:15 AM, I heard the dreaded fading hum, and like you, after several minutes it finally hit me that I was hearing the tornado siren. I ran to the TV, only to hear that the police had sighted a funnel/tornado near an intersection several hundred yards from my apartment, and the radar was showing a huge hook/inflow region right over my neighborhood. Thankfully, whatever it was passed through a large undeveloped area just south of that intersection and made quite a mess there (today that area is full of 3-story apartments).
I've had a weather radio ever since...

So there was a tornado warning???? I woke up to the loudest wind I have heard in my life, pretty frightening considering the year its been...but didnt hear any tornado sirens. Tried to turn on the TV but the power was out and still is. And now have half of the 30 ft tree from my front yard, laying in my driveway.
Re: Did Anybody Else Get Woken Up Last Night?
We're "in" Grimes, didn't hear the sirens, but I did hear the rain/wind. I normally sleep right through a storm and love 'em - but last night was the first time I can recall being a bit concerned.
In the end, we lost a small tree that was planted last spring. It was taken out by our neighbor's trampoline, which also took out one of the 2 mailbox units in our development. I think there were 3 trampolines in our development that were destroyed.

Dang av8r, are they claiming straight line winds hit the area or?

Nasty.
I know there was reported 91ish MPH winds north of Newton.
Watching the rain last night was like nothing I've seen in a while. It came up from the ground, I swear.
