Need help with Windows Vista

I liked XP right away. Anything to get me away from Windows ME.

Ha ha you got ME. Avoided that one like the plague. It was 98SE or 2k for me. However I spent many an hour fixing ME for people. Horrible bloated OS. Not a proud moment for MS.

I don't mind Vista much. I am kind of a DOS nerd (do as much through command line as I can), and it handles DOS about the same as Vista. I haven't installed Vista on my laptop yet because I don't want to slow it down.

I am NOT a fan of Word 2007, however. We have to use lots of field codes for our job, and it's a pain to find them in Word. I am also not a fan of the normal.dotm.

Yeah - you're not gonna want to put Vista on anything that has less much less than 2 GB of RAM. But then, most new computers are designed with more than 2 GB of RAM in them. So then what's the big deal (not directed at you installing it on your laptop - directed at those claiming it sucks because it's a memory hog)?

I honestly can't wait for the day when Microsoft stops licensing keys to XP, so at that point people will be forced to embrace Vista.

Microsoft isn't that foolish, and neither are PC vendors. My small company was just bought by a much larger international company. One of the first decrees that came down was to halt all Vista PC purchases and remove Vista from any computers which may have it installed (we didn't have any thankfully). Apparently Vista can't pass our internal qualification procedures. And our company isn't the only one having these issues with Vista.

People were saying the same thing about XP however many years ago it was. Funny how people are now embracing it like it's a warm security blanket...

Service Packs do wonders. Also, I don't recall nearly the negative reaction to XP that there has been to Vista.

Same here...on two machines.

For me, it's just just a prettier version of XP.

That's how it works on my 2 machines as well. No problems here.

After about a day of figuring out where things were, Vista has been great for me. I had one small driver issue, but that was because I used a driver from dell. No complaints from me at all. Aero is pretty cool as well.

Vista is nice. For the consumer.

In a business environment, I'm not sold on it yet. I did get Vista 64 bit at work on a new machine earlier this year and gave it a try - too many incompatibilities with software that we use and hardware that we have.

I ended up installing a copy of 64 bit linux and running XP as a guest operating system when I need it - it was less of a hassle to get linux to do what I wanted to do than vista.

Never had a problem with Vista. As someone else said, not a single lock-up or freeze.

Our tech folks say we're not to order Vista on new machines unless we're ready to handle all our own problems. I for one am listening and obeying.

A ploy to sell new software? Vista represented the longest release between successive generations of Windows. It was over 5 years after the release of XP.

I guess they could have followed Mac's strategy...
Jaguar followed Cheetah (with a free Puma upgrade in between) after 16 months. Panther followed Cheetah after 14 months. Tiger followed Panther after 18 months. Leopard followed Tiger after 30 months.

I want to remove some programs. All previous Windows programs had an Add/Remove feature in the Control Panel. Does this still exist in Vista? Thanks

I've been trying to remove a flight sim program since 2007.
