Did Steve Fossett Fake His Death?
Adventurer Steve Fossett 'may have faked his own death' - Telegraph
This article raises some very interesting questions. Lloyds of London definitely wants to know for sure, they stand to pay out a 25 million pound (i think that's over $50 million) to his family.

Interesting and it brings up a couple of valid points.
While it would severely tarnish his legacy if true, and he has never indicated he would be the type to do this, I would have to think that if anyone was smart enough to plan this out it would be him.

Much like Leif Garrett faked the death of his career. Except it actually died.

I'm not a big fan of conspiracy theories. They almost never, ever work.
I would be very interested in what an accountant would have to say about this, if they looked at his books. In reality, this could be true if he had enough reason for it. But if he had compelling enough reason to disappear, I might start believing it.
But he'd have to "live off the grid" to make it work. And I'm pretty sure that someone looking hard enough at his books could find telltales that he was planning something like that.
They're right, though. A tube and fabric airplane could be "made to disappear" pretty darned easily. But then, that could also explain why CAP was unable to find the wreckage.

Re: Did Steve Fossett Fake His Death?
Amazing if true, but what I foudn amazing from the artile...
However, Lieutenant Colonel Cynthia Ryan of the US Civil Air Patrol has said Fossett, whose body or plane was never found, could still be alive.
She said: "I've been doing this search and rescue for 14 years. Fossett should have been found.
"It's not like we didn't have our eyes open. We found six other planes while we were looking for him. We're pretty good at what we do."
Yep, pretty good I wonder how long those 6 other planes were missing? -

I have not real love for CAP. By and large, CAP'ers tend to be lots of mouth, and not much actual "do".
However, the six other planes they found were most probably the result of crashes prior to the new technology. Just because IR has advanced to its current state, doesn't mean you reopen all the 1920s through 1970s crash searches.
But I would give my left 'nad to rummage through some of those old crash sites in the desert. There has got to be some cool machines and even cooler stories entombed in the Southwestern Desert.

Don't bother looking near Roswell, NM. Those "weather balloon" crash sites have been pretty much picked over.

Everyone who shouts about them is just labelled as irrelevant.
So if you want to conspire, don't try to cover it up. Hide it in plain sight, if you will.

Wait. An insurance company doesn't want to pay out what it was obligated to pay out? Wow, there is a shocker.
