The logic is that if the big oil producers (OPEC, Russia, Mexico) believe that future demand will be curtailed by conservation efforts they will cut back on expensive, long-term investments in new production capacity.

This is why we need to get the **** off of oil... I mean if we have to pay out the *** for something, lets pay out the *** for something that doesn't go to foriegn interests, require troops abroad to protect, or is dependant on the whims of foriegn countries

Pretty much. They see the writing on the wall. They know that we're fed up with high prices and are looking toward alternative energy sources, and will soon be less dependant upon their oil. Less dependancy = less profit unless they cut back drastically on supply. They're not going to just sit back and let the gravy train crash and burn.
This is why I've always said that oil does not follow the rules of supply and demand like almost every other product/commodity does. They play by a different set of rules, no matter what the "market experts" say.
