Motor oil recycling

I've decided to start changing the oil in my vehicles myself as the price for this very simple task continues to rise. Is it true that local mechanics and other related services are supposed to accept used oil for free, or is this just bad info? I've been told numerous times that this was an actual law aimed at reducing improper disposal. I know that the MWA recycling center in Bondurant accepts motor oil, but I'm wondering if I can just drop it off at a local mechanic.

And please save the "you can get your oil changed for just $15.99 at Joe Blow's" posts. The places that do it for next to nothing are usually the places that put cheap garbage in your engine and over or underfill your crankcase by a half quart or more.

I have a buddy who recycles the oil himself. He has a special furnace that captures some of the toxins unique to used motor oil as it burns. But then he runs an auto shop, and has a bunch of used motor oil.

I think reclaiming motor oil is becoming a pretty big business.

Most auto zones have a bin you can bring unused oil to in order to dump into as well.
