You don't need to have local telephone service to have DSL. They just set you up with a phone number for the DSL service, but you cannot make phone calls with it. We have DSL and use a 500 minute vonage plan with it for about $19 a month. Been really debating about dropping that though and converting over strictly to cell phones. Our son is only one year old now, so he's not going to be using the phone to call 911 anyway at this point, but down the road that is a concern of ours. If its not there already, hopefully the technology will be by the time he's able to use a phone. Only pain is everyone has our home phone number in their records as our main phone line.
