Bank Error in your favor, collect $160
Then spend your lunch break returning it because you're a decent person...
Some how "I'd have kept it" is not what I wanted to hear from the teller as I was leaving...
Nor did I want it confirmed that I was right and the ATM was only supposed to give me $20's, not $100's, therefore they wouldn't have really had a way to know they screwed up or atleast where the money went...
Oh well a confused thank you for returning money the didn't know was missing from the manager is good too right?
(Story - in light of the fact that a tropical storm may come through here this weekend I went to the ATM last night to withdraw a little cash incase power/credit card service gets knocked out (it's happened before). The ATM dispensed 2 - $100 bills in place of some of the $20's it was supposed to give me... the transaction went through as the ammount I wanted but it gave me a lot more money than it was supposed to... so I spent lunch returning it to a confused bank staff)

You're a better man than I am, I would've kept it. Haven't you ever played Monopoly?

I probably would have continued taking out '$40' untill I hit my daily limit...

A hurricane is headed your way and you get $40 out? ...
Either way good for you for doing the right thing.
Are you going back to that ATM any time soon?
I close friend of mine received a 'slightly' higher paycheck than normal... it was 35K more (AFTER taxes) than it should have been!!! Long story short: he told them that day. He got to keep the interest.. it took them 2 weeks to adjust the mistake.

I had WF register a deposit for about $1500 more than it should have. I called them and corrected the error, and got a nice thank you note. -

Re: Bank Error in your favor, collect $160
this happened to a friend of mine. He tried to take out $20 and instead of getting two tens he got two twenties. He was not as scrupulous as you, and just kept the extra twenty. The bank, however tracked him down about a week later, said that the ATM had been malfunctioning, and asked him if he'd rather return the extra money or have it deducted from his account. No such thing as free money I guess.

Used to live in Chicago and was out in the burbs one night partying. I go to this ATM that had to be older than I was and went to get out $20. It gave me a 20, but 2 other twenties came partially out of the machine at the same time. I grabbed those bad boys and treated my buddies to a couple drinks. For the fees banks charge me to get MY money, they could have decent ATMs machines around that don't malfunction. I didn't give it back and never heard a word about it.

No such thing as free money I guess. Precisely - there's no way the bank doesn't figure this out eventually and track their missing money - and you - down. Better to part with the money while you have it now than blow it on stuff you ordinarily wouldn't purchase and have to pay it back later when you don't necessarily have it...
