I'm surprised in this day and age that trains don't have some kind of GPS-based collision detection system, i.e. where horns, buzzers, flashing lights, etc. go off, or perhaps even going as far as forcing the trains to stop when they are detected to be on a collision course. Especially commuter trains where lots of lives are involved.

Probably like with everything else, it comes down to money and whose is going to get used.

I heard a report on the radio that said the same thing. Theoretically the railroads want the automated systems, but they need to decide which system to use and find the money to pay for it.
