Re: Corvette ZR1 Cancelled?
Speaking of the ZR1. Here are the latest results from Car and Driver.
* Zero to 60 mph in 3.4 brain-scrambling seconds
* Zero to 100 mph in 7.6 seconds
* An 11.5-second, 128-mph quarter-mile blast
If those numbers aren’t quite what you were hoping for, let the skidpad and braking numbers lift your spirits: 1.07 g and just 142 feet to stop from 70 mph—the shortest stopping distance we’ve ever recorded for a production car.

I'll also be curious if the new Corvettes will come with manual transmissions considering Chevy no longer offers the standard transmission in their trucks anymore which was another boneheaded move that I know upset a lot of farmers.
The Camaro will be a 2010 model year, but GM plans on selling them to the public on March 1, 2009. So the Camaro is really only 6 months away.
The ZR-1 and ZO6 are only available with a manual. The manual transmissions used in the Corvettes and upcoming Camaros aren't related to the manual transmissions used in trucks. So those are two seperate issues that really have nothing to do with each other.

Still interesting how they basically had no 2008 and 2009 2 door sports car model besides the Corvette. You'd think they'd at least continue the Monte Carlo another year before they released the Camero. Although I'm sure most dealers probably still have some 2007 "new" Montes still on the lot to get rid of. I was pretty lucky that I started shopping for mine when I did because Karl had just submitted their final order for the last run on Montes the week before I started looking and they were able to change 1 of the orders to the specs I wanted since the factory had not begun production on their order yet.

IMO, the late model Monte Carlo is one of the most hideous cars ever made. I'm not at all surprised that GM killed it off. The Camaro looks pretty good, from what I've seen, but I'm sure GM will somehow find a way to fill the interior full of cheap plastic as well.
edit: Monte Carlo SS with a FWD V8? Seriously?

Well I will have to respectfully disagree with you on the ugly comment. I've probably got more comments on this car than anything I have ever driven but then again this is probably the sharpest looking car I've ever owned too. I guess everyone has their own taste and opinion though. I do like the looks of the new concept Camero at the moment.
Yeah a FWD 303 HP V8 is not exactly practical but it doesn't really bother me really and in the winter I'm glad it's FWD because this car sits kind of low. That's the 1 thing they could have tweaked, the mud flaps aren't that far off the ground so when you have a loaded trunk and/or a couple people in the back seat turning into drives with an incline or hitting a hard bump will cause the rear flaps to scrap the ground slightly.

I know looks are subjective, but the Monte Carlos just look all out of proportion to me, and always have. The doors are HUGE. In fact, the whole car is huge - and needlessly so. What's the point of a sports car that isn't sporty? It's like someone took a perfectly good sedan, lopped off two doors, and tried to make it a sports car without changing any of the other bits that are required to make it sporty (i.e. suspension, drivetrain etc).
It's the epitome of crap american cars, IMO.

I drove a Grand Am before the Monte and in terms of practicality I love the build of the Monte much more than the Grand Am. The Grand Am would basically qualify for exactly what you don't like with the Monte as far as the door size and overall bulk of the car. I like the bigger doors, I had a heck of a time getting over-sized things into the passenger seat with the Grand Am, not the case with the Monte. The back seat has more room, the trunk fits more and with a V8 under the hood you kind of have to have a longer front to fit it.
The crash test ratings are pretty decent too, 5 stars for front impact, 4 for rear but 3 for side impact is it's downfall. Rollover got a 4 star rating. It's a pretty solid built car in my opinion. Again, not every car is for everyone so I'm not trying to sell you on it but as far as what I wanted in a 2 door car the Monte was a good fit for me. For instance I will never buy a foriegn company car like Honda, Toyota, etc. Does that mean they don't have good cars, no but my reasoning is I just don't like a lot of the things with those cars plus I have an issue with spending that much money on a foriegn company when I could be giving my business to an American company such as GM. I had a relative that worked for GM so that is part of my bias as well but even without that all my family has ever owned are GM vehicles and we've had some pretty long lasting cars so that's alone will get you repeat business. I'm not a Ford guy but I think I'd even buy a Ford before I'd consider a Toyota.

I think the interior is of the new Camaro will be fine. The General has really picked it up in that area. The Malibu and CTS are both very nice. The newest Car and Driver drove the V6 Camaro and they seemed satisfied with it.
I agree with you on the Monte to a point. My only difference is that the Monte isn't a sports car. I always viewed it as more of a personal tourer. A big comfortable car for guys without families to tote around. It wouldn't be for me, however. Unless it's for the wife, I'm not buying a FWD car.

That's because the Monte isn't a sports car - it's a throwback to the muscle car class of the '60s and '70s - all of which had huge proportions.
As for the "huge doors" - most coupes (2 dr vehicles) have rather large doors - otherwise it'd be almost impossible for people in the back seat to get out of the car.

There are just some people out there that think that no matter what an American car company puts out that it will always be inferior to a foreign car company.
Re: Corvette ZR1 Cancelled?
Well muscle car or sports car, whatever you want to call it I like it. :biggrin:T his is one car if I ever had the money to spend on a "hobby car" this is what I'd get:

I think you missed my main point. I didn't say it was inferior, they very well could make good cars but when I am spending in excess of $20k on a purchase I much rather it go to an American company. Not everything I own is American obviously, all you have to do is look at my electronics to see that but I'm not taking out loans to and spending a ton of money on those like I do when I make a major purchase such as a car. I think GM makes quality cars, and considering my family or personally I've own or driven a GM car nearly my entire life and I've been satisfied with them I continue to go back the next time I am in the market for a new car. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just personal preference.
Re: Corvette ZR1 Cancelled?
The new challenger is cool looking but it weighs as much as an SUV. Hopefully the Camaro isn't such a hog.

Eh, nothing wrong with my Monte and still have plenty of warranty coverage on it so have no intent on getting rid of it any time soon. I think it may be a sad day when I finally do get rid of the Monte because the next vehicle will likely have 2 more doors to it for practicality reasons. :sad: Was kind of the whole point I got the car now while I still could because I'm getting married next year and a few more years after that will be having kids so I may never get to have another "fun" car again till retirement.
