    Corvette ZR1 Cancelled?

2009 Corvette ZR1: Corvette ZR1 Production Halted, Possibly Canceled?

That would be pretty sad, but it's somewhat difficult to justify producing a car like that in the current economic climate.

I read that the Corvette brand has always operated as a loss, but would never be cut due to the marketing power it generates for Chevy.

    Re: Corvette ZR1 Cancelled?

It would be dumb for them not to produce this car. Just like other ZR1's of the past, they will make a limited supply and sell everyone they make.

The economy may be in the dumps but some people will still spend the money on something like this. If you don't believe me watch Berret Jackson in a few months.

GM will not cancel production this car even if the economy slips further. People that can afford this car aren't in financial trouble. The base model sells for $105K and the one with all the bells and whistles sells for $115K. The word is Chevrolet will only produce 2000 ZR1s per year. It's a guarantee that everyone of them will be snatched up and rather quickly. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a waiting list to purchase this vehicle.

While the Nissan GT-R outperforms the Corvette ZO6 on a track. The ZR1 is reportedly much different and far better than the ZO6. I'd be shocked if the GT-R outperformed the ZR1, but the ZR1 should be a better car based on its window sticker. There's no way I'd buy a Nissan over a Corvette. I guess you have to be a Corvette guy to understand why.

I've owned a Corvette so I guess that would make me a "Corvette guy"

IMO the base corvette is the real bargain. You can get a ton of performance for just over $40K (employee pricing). I don't think the extra $70K is justified for most people. For $110,000 you still get basically the same styling and the same interior. You're paying a lot extra for horsepower that the average person will never use.

For me it's not always about 0-60 or lap times. I had more fun autocrossing a Honda Civic Si than I did my Nissan 350Z.

People buying Corvettes are not the ones who are being hurt to badly by the economy.

I don't disagree that the base corvette is the real bargain. You can not get a better performing car for anywhere near that price. You are paying a lot for a ZR1, but the styling is quite a bit different. If you set the two side-by-side it's easy to see the differences. Now the difference between a ZO6 and a ZR1 is a lot more subtle. No, an extra $70K isn't justified for the average American, but the average American isn't buying a ZR1. If you have the money to buy one, obviously the price isn't an issue, and this will be a highly collectible car.

What each person enjoys driving is a personal preference. I prefer cars that go 0-60 in under 5 seconds and can pull near 1.0 g on a skidpad.

    Re: Corvette ZR1 Cancelled?

It looks like Chevy has pushed back the re-release of the Camero to 2010 now after unveiling the concept car for this nearly 2 years ago. Strange why they cut off production of the Monte Carlo in 2007 and will have nearly a 3 year gap for a mid-range 2 door sports car until the Camero is out.

I'll also be curious if the new Corvettes will come with manual transmissions considering Chevy no longer offers the standard transmission in their trucks anymore which was another boneheaded move that I know upset a lot of farmers.

An excellent comment from a rational guy. Due to economic conditions, get the starter kit and be happy. Good advice.

    Re: Corvette ZR1 Cancelled?

A base corvette today will smoke nearly any old "special edition" corvette of the past. I remember when the ZR-1 came out and how everyone was impressed with 405 horsepower.

The big question is whether this is the year that the horsepower wars end. If this is the case the ZR-1 is going to be worth a mint. Look and see how much a 69 vette with a 427 brings compared to a 74 corvette.
