My Dad was hit head on by a drunk driver. My Dad thought he was going to die in the middle of nowhere. His seatbelt saved his life but left a hell of a bruise across his chest. The motor of the minivan he was driving left the vehicle.

Just don't drive drunk and wear a seatbelt!

You would think it would be just common sense right? Your dad was very lucky. Its usually the drunk who survives.

Well, at least it wasn't the story you usually read about. The drunk sitting along the highway with his head in his hands and a family dead in a minvan. I hope these guys learn a lesson. Knowing how guys with mulitple DUIs turn out though, I wouldn't count on it.

I'm amazed at the number of DUI's people can get...

Something along the lines of Chicago's "Three Strikes You're Out" policy should be instituted...

At minimum there should be increasing penalties associated with continued DUI's - too many stories of poeple paying a fine and taking a course or whatever and getting off

Bingo. When I worked at a bank in Janesville, WI - Rock Co, I would get tons of guys constantly bragging about their DUI's, loss of license, and how they drive without it anyway. It was a big joke to them. I dont mean to trash Rock County citizens in general, but man did I interact with quite a few that sucked.

I'd rather have Germany's rules, where driving truly is a privilege and not a right. First, it's extremely expensive to drive in the first place, which makes people not screw around with it. Second, get caught drinking and driving once in Germany and you're done driving - for life.

Could you imagine the mass anarchy that would insue if this were to go into effect here? I would love such a law, but I dont want my house burned down because I supported it.

That's great - in theory. Just because these idiots with multiple DUIs can't get a license doesn't mean they won't drive anymore (probably while drunk again).

Hence mandatory jail time should start to follow with successive DUI's... preferablly increasing jail time.

Ah, see, a use to society. Good thinking. The shooting into space thing might have some sort of impact on future generations. Dont want a bunch of drunks turning into meteors and then come crashing down on us.
