I would like to purchase ski equipment ASAP.

    Any suggestions?

Re: Would like to purchase ski equipment

Where are you? What sort of skier are you? Don't skimp on boots, the better the boots, the happier your feet and legs. Trust me. Get a good shaped ski, buy one that fits your ski style. If you don't know, ask for an all-mountain ski. I love Rossignol, K2, Atomic, Elan and Salomon. Buy last year's or the year before models. Save a lot of cash. If you want to buy online, go to Sierra Trading Post - Save 35-70% on Famous Name Brands if they have them in stock, they are usually very cheap. Hope this helps. I recommend buying in person though, so they fit you correctly. Skis, poles, boots.

Also, snowboarding is an absolute blast. Once you pick it up, it is so much fun. Seems to be easier on the body than skiing too.

I would also say that having a good set of boots is very important. I have a set of "Rossignol Soft Lights" and they are awesome!

Since this is a skiing thread, I have to give props to skiboarding! It's amazingly fun and suits all ability levels. It's almost like rollerblading on snow.

Skiboarding also has the highest rate of blown ACL's due to their non-releasable bindings.

I'd recommend staying away from skiboarding, especially if you don't want to get made fun of at the big western resorts and due to their injury-prone nature.

Plus they suck in soft, deep snow! I guess its like trying to ride rollerskates through the grass.

I'd like to disagree with this...
Most skiboards do have non-releasable bindings, but you can get releaseable bindings for skiboards. In fact, some of the longer boards only have releaseables.

I've skiboarded the last 3 years in colorado and have never been made fun of yet. In fact, most people I have met out there are curious about them and have given me compliments. (besides, why should anybody be scared away from doing something if they are going to get made fun of? If that was the case, I wouldn't wear ISU clothing in IC.)

Lastly, if you get the correct type of skiboards, they blast through deep powder as easy as regular skis. Most people will have trouble in powder if they are on "ski blades" which are completely different. Skiboards are symmetrical and a lot wider, most skiboards actually have more surface area than regular skis.

Well, if you want to purchase ASAP then I would go to a ski store instead of cyclonefanatic.com.

Skip skiing and get a snowboard, it is so much more exciting.

    Sports Authority - SNIAGRAB

I know there were weekends where Sports Authority would set up shop in a parking lot on the Western Slope to hit some of the ski towns.

I have skied for years but have never attempted snowboarding.

For someone that has done both what are the advantages and disadvantages of snowboarding vs. snow sking?

In addition is it difficult to make the transition from sking to snowboarding?

I have never skied, just snowboard, but I would say the one advantage skiing has is if you want to go slower or on flatter ground... Almost impossible to do alot of the slower trails on a snowboard...

Skiing was easy for me to pickup. Snowboarding I could never pick up. I only tried it a couple of times but falling down and getting back up is hard with the snowboard.

Not to get off topic but has anyone taken the Amtrak to Colorado to ski? Every other year my wife and I and another couple drive out to summit county, stay for about 6 days, rent a condo, etc. This is the year that we won't be going but I'd still like to get some skiing in but don't want to drive by myself for the whole trip.

So I grew up skiing every year. The first 2 days of snowboarding was like learning to ride a bike all over again, it was painful!

Once I got the hang of it, it was like a totally new sport, and brought back excitement.

One nice thing about snowboarding is the equipment is much cheaper, and easier to deal with, the boots are comfortable instead of hard and rigid. Once I tried snowboarding I decided to give up skiing forever, I have not looked back.
