Re: Buy an American Vehicle!
It seems to me like the system is working the way it should as long as the government doesn't try to get in the way. Poorly run companies with outdated business models are fading away as newer, stronger companies rise to take their place. It isn't always easy, it isn't always painless, but it is exactly how it should work in a free market capitalist society.
I used to buy into the whole buy American thing, but you know what, I work hard for my money and the company that can give me the best product for the dollar is going to earn my business. I purchased my first foreign car last year, and now I wonder why I didn't come around sooner.

I am happy with my foriegn car as it was the best product available. I have put over 40k miles on it (it's now at 90k) and have had no problems other than scheduled maintenance. My car also gets 35 mpg which I'm pretty happy with.
I owned a few American Cars (2 Saturns and a Ford Escort). They all had tons of problems outside of general maintenance, and they all had lower gas mileage. It cost me more to own these cars.
I want a car that gets from point a to point b in the most efficient way possible. These days it tends to be a Honda, Toyota, etc... I don't care about power, performance, or speed. I just want something basic.
If GM or Ford came out with a quality product I would consider purchasing one...
A car is a liability, not an asset. Why would the consumer take on a larger liability because it's local?

That would be AIG (not AIT) and it wasn't their executives. It was their top sales people that were given a sales goal at the beginning of the year and those that met the goal, we're rewarded with this retreat.
I don't blame you for the misunderstanding. This is the fault of the mainstream media for not understanding what they were reporting on.

Could not be happier with my foreign cars(Plural) that are reliable and good looking. I also have a US made truck, however, best vehicles I have ever owned are Foreign(Toyota and Nissan) and the US vehicles are not even close in my mind...
The downfall of the BIG 3 other than crappy management are the Unions. Don't get me wrong, it is unfortunate for all of those people that may loose their jobs...I get that and it will be too bad if that is what happens.

Z Management of the companies is a big problem. They are willing to sell out everything to the union in order to get short term gains, and now they are paying for it.

Re: Buy an American Vehicle!
The biggest problem.... 2 actually...
The US automakers made vehicles that everyone wanted 5 years ago. That was the big, gas guzzling, SUVs. Everyone had one. I'm willing to say probably more then half the people on the board had one. Or a nice sized pickup... That was in high demand and people bought them... They listened to the local market.
The global market was going towards the smaller cars, but not the local market....
2.
Unions.... They are bleeding these big 3 to death. Unions are probably the worst thing ever created in my opinion.
Notice Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Kia, or other foreign car company don't have unions....

Re: Buy an American Vehicle!
This thread might get moved to the cave, but I think it is a good one. I am a Democrat, yet I was not in favor of the Wall Street Bailout, and I'm not in favor of a bailout for the Big 3. I think the unions are partly to blame, but the companies themselves shoulder most of this responsibility. Like Senator Dodd said today, "Their board rooms in my view have been devoid of vision" and "The Big Three turned a blind eye to opportunities. They have promoted and often driven the demand of inefficient, gas guzzling vehicles, and dismissed the threat of global warming." Personally, I drive a domestic vehicle. All my vehicles have been. But, I certainly do not begrudge anyone from choosing a foreign car. That's the choice you can make in a free market. Capitalism at it's finest. As far as I am concerned, poor business practices should not be rewarded. And if that means that they go bankrupt, that's their own fault. And let's be honest here. We're not talking about the death of the Ford brand, here. United Airlines ran for years while in bankruptcy. The average consumer saw very little of it.
