$2000 - $2500 will buy you a LOT of car right now. Just make sure to look at it carefully.
My wife and I are both driving really nice sub-$2000 cars and loving it.
someone here is selling a car for 2k its a '97 Dodge starts with an "S" stratus? can't remember, it has 70 to 80k on it for miles
