Camera dilemma (round II)
From the privious camera thread I've narrowed it down to the
Canon PowerShot A590 IS ($129 on line) VS. Nikon Coolpix L18 ($100 @ Walmart)
This is for my 12 year-old daughter for Christmas. From what I gather, the PowerShot has more capabilities for more $. Shes no pro with the camera, but would the difference between them be something she would appreciate later in life? Granted technology marches on. To me it looks like another $30 buys alot more camera.

You are correct. The IS is key.

Honestly, get whatever is cheapest.
5 years from now you'll be able to buy point and shoot cameras with the same image quality and features for 20 bucks.
The camera I spent 250 bucks on a few years back are going for 50 bucks on Ebay. Takes great pictures, but time marches on.
Re: Camera dilemma (round II)
I don't know anything about the current Nikon, but I bought a Nikon point and shoot entry level camera, and it was horrible. Bad color reproduction and amazing slow shutter lag. Canon would be my first choice. You can get some good advice here about most cameras. They are pretty brutally honest about what a camera does and does not do well:

I got the IS for my hunting and fishing trips, does a nice job...

Again, I love my Canon A590 IS. As you said, "$30 buys a lot more camera."
Re: Camera dilemma (round II)
Buy this Canon:Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS digital camera
It is currently $150 at BestBuy. I got one for my GF in July, works great and she loves it. Takes great pictures with ease, you rarely if ever delete because the camera messed up or it is blurry. I just bought another for my dad for Christmas. You cannot go wrong with this one. I also got a high speed 4gb SD card for $20. Just go to any BestBuy right now!
Re: Camera dilemma (round II)
Thanks for the input. My head is clear (at least on the camera issue).:wideeyed:

I'd go for the cheap one, she's going to upgrade to something else in a year anyway. The thing will be outdated a day after you buy it.
