There is evil in this world, and it cannot be reasoned with and I am sorry to say there are no social programs to cure it. There is usually only prison time or death. In my lifetime, it seems respect for human life has hit an all-time low, and that really is sad. just ask Plax.

I was in Ames in the early seventies, and I remember families walking the streets of Frat and Sorority rows late at night to see the progress made with regard to the floats that were being constucted for the next days parade. Since I don't live in Ames anymore, the only thing that was truely identifiable to me, was the VEISHEA event, and the riotous conduct really through me for a loop. And a killing? My first thoughts were how could this possibly have happened? I don't think that you can relate the VEISHEA riots to the town turning bad or being unsafe. In all of the riots, you can trace the trouble to overzealous cops, drunk students, a lot of out of towners and kicking people out of the bars early. When you get a bunch of drunk people up against cops eager to put on riot gear, there's going to be a problem. I don't doubt that families still walk around and look at the floats. These riots mostly happened around 2am.

Re: 2 people murdered in Ames...
I don't know the details of this, but it seems to me domestic violence is on the rise. These more recent murders were people that knew each other killing each other. Maybe I'm misinformed?
I live just a few blocks away from the murders and I generally feel pretty safe in Ames. Then again, I grew up in a bigger city and had friends in neighborhoods that you wouldn't want to go to past dark.

These riots mostly happened around 2am. I understand. You may be right. That being said, VEISHEA has been part and parcel to activities in Ames since 1922. I am not saying that the VEISHEA riots were the catalyst for future behavior. What I am saying is that if riotous conduct and a murder take place within the confines of VEISHEA and what it had stood for, for over 75 years then there have been some changes in the general culture of Ames. I am using VEISHEA 97 only as a time reference and as in general, an activity that you would not normally associate with this kind of behavior. There have been drunk people attending VEISHEA events, probably since 1922. I assume the police felt it was necessary to put on their riot gear for some reason. Maybe because there had been a murder committed elsewhere in town. I don't know, I wasn't there.

Re: 2 people murdered in Ames...
Probably about a month ago up in somerset, some college kid was mugged on his way home from work and was in critical condition. It seems like more and more of this is happening.

I guess that a fence should be put up around Ames...maybe it should be its own country, and immigration can be tightly controlled.
All you people who seem to think that you are such great Americans but still seem to find a subtle way to say you think certain groups of people should be treated differently are sickening.

(you the taxpayer make up the difference) It's all in the name of "helping" people. Usually what happens is you have a single mom with a couple of kids with a lousy track record in making good choices in life. Oftentimes the under/unemployed boyfriend lives with these women illegally under the radar of the government. When your rent is only $45 per month, it leaves a lot of money (and free time) for booze, smokes, drugs, etc.
What brought this to Ames was the construction boom and resulting overbuilding of apartments. Landlords, with no ties to the city and soaring vacancy rates, chose Section 8 as a way to fill the units and make their mortgage payments. To ensure a steady flow of renters, one party took the bold step of advertising in poor areas of Chicago all the cheap housing and job opportunities here in Ames.
The rest is history.
"Needed diversity" is a senseless waste of time instituted by PC conscious people who have no clue about reality.

Re: 2 people murdered in Ames...
I swear to god... why does everyone think that Chicago is the problem here... Obviously the suspect in this case has lived in Iowa for quite some time.
Maybe if all the "bad people" from Chicago have moved to Ames you should move to Chicago... that would show 'em.

It depends on what you mean by "certain groups of people." Inner city people from Chicago are responsible for the majority of the problems which are happening in Ames at the moment. The fact that the majority of them are black is merely coincidence. I, like many others here, know many people with a similar or same skin color who are sucessful and are assets to our community, so it's not about skin color. What I find sickening is that out of guilt, we have devised ways of helping people which not only do not help them, but puts them in a situation from which it is very unlikely they will ever improve. We create zombies who wander through life and contribute nothing to society.
The simple fact is that our misguided social programs over the last 40 years have created this situation. Until we realize that and change our course of action, things are going to only get worse, not better. That I find sickening and depressing.

I agree... a lot of what government tries doesn't work... whoever, putting yourself on an island isn't an answer either.

Re: 2 people murdered in Ames...
Ames is still a very safe place. I've lived in quite a few different bigger cities in Iowa and Ames was definitely the safest when it came to crime (I'm going off more than feeling, I researched the census data of all places.) Just think you could be in Waterloo. Here it's not a whole lot bigger in population and has 2-3 the number of crimes (2:5 ratio of rape cases, 1:7 of robbery cases, 2:11 for burglary) committed per year and a lot more homicides in the past 10 years.
