That does sound like a good team. I do remember Rick Engel now. Where did Gibbs go to College if he played in NBA?

Bench:
Tim Legg - backup PG
Boma Leuth - 3 point specialist
Pete Fretz - 6-8 backup C Sounds like a really good team, wish I could have seen them play!

Re: '09 Ames HS Team vs. past Ames State Champs
So, some of you long time Ames residents, how does the '09 team compare to the '91, '76, and '73 teams, specifically?
Who do you think would win and why? Hypothetically, of course.
I've got to give the nod to the '73 team. Schneider, Burguson, and Carroll were awfully tough back then. But then, I've been away for a long time.

Keith Murphy said last night that none of the current members were even born when Freddie was winning the championship. Enough to make me feel very, very old! -

The first time I ever saw my all time favorite cyclone (Hoiberg) was when he was in the state championship game. I was farily little then but I remember him being basically unstoppable.

Re: '09 Ames HS Team vs. past Ames State Champs
I played lived with Pete Fretz in college and we played on the same intramural team. Dude was really good but not good enough to be a starter at Ames. He sure made the rest of us look better.
Heck, they also had a 6'9" student trainer that year. He couldn't play ball very well but at most schools, with his height, they would have made him. At Ames he was taping ankles.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy is on a tear and Iowa City High is still dangerous. I'll stick with my origional assessment.. it will go thru Cedar Rapids!

Ah, no disrespect intended, can't blame you for pulling for the home team, but this has nothing to do with this thread (a little bit maybe).
Come on Ames residents from today and years past, how good is this current Ames team, and specifically, could they beat the past Ames Champs?

Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Iowa City High, and Linn-Mar are all super dangerous. Let's also not forgot that Ames plays in a weaker conference than the Cedar Rapids schools. CR Kennedy and Linn-Mar have been blowing out some good teams themselves.
Ames is an awesome team, but this will be far from easy for them to win. And I would go so far as to say they are underdogs. CR Kennedy, Linn-Mar, and City High have all gone far in the tournament for the past several years, they have the experience.
