'09 Ames HS Team vs. past Ames State Champs
I realize Ames hasn't won State yet, and don't wish to jinx them, but provided they do win State this year, or even if they don't, how does the current Ames team compare w/ past Ames State Champs? I've never seen the current team play, nor did I ever see Hoiberg's team of '91, but I do remember the '73 and '76 teams. They were pretty good, especially the '73 team. The '73 team, at the time, was the best team ever in the state, IMO. Schneider, Burguson, Carrol, et al. They were tall too, 6'11'', 6'7", 6'4'", 6'2", 6'2". Ames' '76 squad had Harmison 6'9", Burguson (6'4" I think), Klingseis 6'3". I did some checking, and didn't know that Ames also won State back in '36, '45, and '55 (probably when there was only one class). And no, I can't remember THAT far back! -

90-91 was a pretty good team.

Re: '09 Ames HS Team vs. past Ames State Champs
I will say the 2004 team was one of the most under acheiving teams ive witnessed....
C- Marsden -Played at ISU
F- Bachoven -Played at Navy
F- Thompson -Here now
G- Arnaud -D1 athlete
G- Luthe -Great athlete, dont know if he went anywhere
I dont know how this team didnt win state... might have been the coach. But when you have 3 D1 bball players 6'10", theres not a lot of excuses.

The state BB championship will go thru Cedar Rapids.

Re: '09 Ames HS Team vs. past Ames State Champs
AHS has had some teams crippled by coaching in the past

That was the year I really started to question Marsden and Thompson as players. They both may have been ranked but they weren't 'winners'. No excuse for a team with that front line not to dominate and they didn't dominate at all...

I'm surprised this many follow HS basketball. I can't really get into it. If I had a kid in school or if I worked for a NCAA basketball team it'd be different however....
I don't drink the Kool-Aid, and I am done making excuses. Only keeping it real... -

Re: '09 Ames HS Team vs. past Ames State Champs
The '91 team had Hoiberg (6'4) - enough said Mike Bergan (5'10 ish) - Played PG for St. Thomas in MN Nathan Koch (6'5) - Walked on to Iowa baseball team as a pitcher, threw out his arm & then walked onto the basketball team. I remember hearing that he called Coach Hallihan at ISU who then called the Iowa staff on his behalf. Won vertical leap contest Seth Anderson (6-2) - schollarship at UNI in basketball Rob Cain (6-8) - Played for Wartburg.
Bench:
Tim Legg - backup PG
Boma Leuth - 3 point specialist
Pete Fretz - 6-8 backup C

67 was another great Ames team with Dick Gibbs, who played quite a few years in the NBA, Rick Engel, who starred for ISU, Ron Watson, who played d-2 football I believe and was in the ISU athletic department for awhile, and guards named Bappe and Beeman who I both believe played d-3 basketball.

They play very well as a team and have a variety of weapons.

He could have DOMINATED all by himself, but they had a good team and he shared the rock...

I wouldn't give the state championship to Ames just yet. Linn Mar has two D1 signees and a freshmen point gaurd that is very good.
