Re: 100-0 Girls HS B-ball game
Somewhere Bill Belichick is patting himself on that back while smiling ear to ear. "I remember being on that side. When I was coaching defense it was my job to keep the score down, not theirs. When you're playing defense it's your job to stop them. It's not (the offense's) job to not score. It's like I tell the offense, what the (bleep) do you think I send you guys out there for? To punt?" -

He could have dropped back in a zone and instructed his girls that their main goal was not to let the ball get into the paint. On offense, he could have told the girls that they had to run a full cycle of the offense before they shoot. In other words, there was no doubt that they were going to win. They could have used the time more productively by making it a practice session. Or gee, maybe he could have put in his backup point guard and let her gain some experience. My daughter's team can press but once it's a 10 point lead you can no longer press. Shouldn't need a rule to call off the dogs after a 50 point lead or so. There is no defending a 100 point win at that level. NONE.
I agree with Belicheck because he's coaching a pro team. If you are getting paid then I don't have a problem with a beat down. As long as everyone is aware that paybacks can be a *****.

Granted, I think this was a ********* move and I'm not in favor of what the guy did, but I sense a lot of hypocrisy with this thread. I have never said on this board - run up the score. College is significantly different than high school and youth - I am fine with a 4-5 touchdown win or 25 point win in basketball - however - much over that - and you should not even be playing that team unless you have to - conference game.
If you are up - call off the dogs. Put the reserves in and while it is tough to tell them not to score - you teach them more by teaching them how to win with character and respect for your opponent.
I also believe it is upsportsmanlike in college when Bob Stoops/Urban Meyer/Mack Brown/Hayden Fry/Ferentz/Nebraska and many others have their starters in in the 4th quarter throwing for bombs. These guys do it all the time. It shows a lack of class.
Margin of victory should NOT be in the BCS point formula - so much for NCAA teaching of sportsmanship.
That said - this is about high school / youth and there is no excuse for this behavior.

Blowout remorse; shame from winning by a large margin
Has Iowa State ever had this problem?
Should sports teams "hold back" when the outcome is no longer in question?
A Texas high school girls basketball team was on the winning end of a 100-0 game.
Now officials from The Covenant School say they are trying to do the right thing by seeking a forfeit and apologizing for the margin of victory.
It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened," Kyle Queal, the head of the school, said in a statement, adding the forfeit was requested because "a victory without honor is a great loss."

Love the character. Amateur sports isn't about embarrasing your opponents or their supporters.
Yes, teams should hold back for several reasons. Class; you shouldn't need to run up the score to make yourself feel better. Revenge; you will probably play that team again, why give them extra motivation?

Granted, I think this was a ********* move and I'm not in favor of what the guy did, but I sense a lot of hypocrisy with this thread. If some college team is playing their 3rd stringers while running their base offense and they're still pounding you, well, then there's not much that can be done about that.
This case is much, much different. Playing all of your starters almost until the end, continuing to pressure the ball the entire length of the floor, and intentionally trying to break 100 isn't even remotely the same scenario I listed above.
If you can't see the difference between the two, well, I can't help you I guess.

Hey did you guys hear some school in Texas beat another school like 100-0 or something like that?
Seriously though, I wonder if Marty & Miller had anything to say about it? They were sure freaking out when Ames beat Valley by a large margin earlier this season because they were still pressing in the 4th quarter.

Re: 100-0 Girls HS B-ball game
Loosing school only has total enrollment of 20 girls all with learning disabilities. Saw them on TV and they are BAD. Most have never played before. Winning coach sounds like an @$$. He kept starters in most of game. Did not take any action until story hit the press days later and there was a public outcry.

Re: 100-0 Girls HS B-ball game
I reffed a girls game last night that was like 40-15 at half time and I caught myself thinking about this thread ... like how much worse would the other team have to be to have a 59-0 score at half time?
They didn't press to get that score, thinking about it a little more there are probably hundreds of games around the country that end something like 85-15 and never get mentioned. The "100" and the "0" are really glaring numbers ... 99-2 probably only gets a footnote.
