Tax prep website
Anybody use TaxAct.com? Would you recommend it to do my taxes?
My sister has done my taxes the last few years because she worked for a tax lawyer but she has decided to "retire" to spend time with her kids so I need to find another way to do my taxes...without having to do it the old fashioned book way.
Any other website suggestions? That are free I might add...

Yes and Yes. I have used them since they were created.
Used to work with that bunch. They are an Iowa product.

It is like $10 to buy the deluxe version with online help and phone support, so it is pretty cheap. States are extra.

Re: Tax prep website
I would only recommend software for the most basic of returns. Based on the experiences of my wife who happens to be a CPA specializing in taxes, she finds instances of overpayment of taxes yearly of people who used off the shelf software.
If you have anything more than a very basic return, they can end up costing you money. FWIW, the same can be said about people who go to H&R Block or their local attorney.

I used to do all my returns myself, then take them in to H&R to be finalized and sent away. I got tired of having to explain tax code to the people there, so I started using Turbotax, and it works well. My returns aren't incredibly complex, but I do itemize. -

The IRS has a free online version, but no wizards or walk-throughs. just a blank form to fill out.

Re: Tax prep website
I have used Tax Act the last several years and been very pleased with it. You have to gather all the info anyway, so you just as well punch in the numbers yourself. It also saves the info from year to year, making it really easy for next years taxes.

Re: Tax prep website
I'm filing for the first time unattached to my parents this year, with a move to a different state in the middle of the year....something like taxact easy enough for me to do on my own and get through, or should I have them prepared somewhere for me, at least this first time?
