Anyone else hear about this? Sounds like it is pretty serious. And the 0 degree temperatures did not help any. The wife of one of my co-workers owns a business in this area. He has been out all morning making sure the flames do not spread to their shop.
We had a structure fire one time when it was this cold out. I took off my gloves for a minute and they completely froze, I had to find a new pair of gloves. It's one of those experiences that every firefighter should experience at sometime, but no one wants to experience it more then once.
I was a student at ISU when the FIJI fraternity house burned down in sub-zero temps. After it was all over, it looked like an ice castle from all the water they poured into it

I believe a photo of that made its way to Time Magazine...

We had a small fire at the local care center this winter one night when it was -25. Thankfully it was confined as far away from the residents as possible, but I was pretty well encased in ice in short order.
One of the difficulties in that fire when it was that cold is that there was zero visibility - the cold air hitting the warm, humid air of the care center filled everything with a thick fog. That and if you were outside, water and steam flash-froze to your visor.
