Across all (or many) genres:
Female: Aretha Franklin is not a bad choice
Male: Roy Orbison covered three octaves

Neither one is my favorite though.

Rolling Stone recently did a poll about this. It was cool to see the handwritten ballots of those in the music business. Howlin' Wolf got a lot of mentions along with John Lee Hooker...among the more obvious names. Do a search in Rolling Stone...the handwritten ballots might still be linked! Good reading...

Seriously if you go by pure voice talents alone as much as I hate to say it Bobby McFerrin (sp?). They guy has an 4 octave range and perfect pitch, incredible talent. With his one huge hit that make everyone want to punch someone in the face. I for one think he did that on purpose, he just seems like he might be evil on the inside. That and ""Don't worry be happy" is truly insidious.

Funny that no one has mentioned the likes of Pavarotti or Callas--let alone ISU Prof Simon Estes. Orbison might be in the top...thousand. Maybe.

surprised at how many people listed Bob Dylan and John Lennon in the Rolling Stone poll. Both are amazing songwriters and musicians, but singers? Really?
