Back in college, I purchased a Sony Wega 34' tv. This tv is built like a tank. Not the projection type, rather straight up tube.
Anyway, this past weekend the screen would not turn on. I can hear the tv power (click) on, but the "standby" light blinks in a pattern of 6 times. I have Googled the problem and the standby frequency and it looks like it is something that will have to be professional repaired w/ the circuit board inside.
Has anyone ever had this type of issue? Or simply went through tv repair? I'm questioning if it is worth spending the money to have a tech come look at it and then pay for repairs, or just buy something new.
I would think that if you called a repair place and asked for a guessimate based on the info you have, they could give you that amount, and go from there.
We just got rid of our Toshiba 36" that weighed 210 pounds. Seriously, that much. I will never buy something that heavy again! (won't really have to with LCDs)
We have a little tv that got struck by lightening last summer. I've been pondering if it is worth getting it fixed or not for our spare bedroom to use.
I have the same tv as well. Heaviest TV on earth. I decided when i move the TV stays. I think it weighs in around 180lbs.
I would have to respectfully disagree on the weight issue. Around the turn of the millenium, (sorry, I just like saying that), I bought a 38" RCA High-Def tube TV that has a Directv receiver as well as the high-def receiver built into the unit. Yep, it's all inside the cabinet!! The thing weighs so much, I had to reinforce the shelves next to my fireplace before I dared set it up there.
I probably shouldn't have bought it, but it was near the end of the year, and American gave me a great deal 'cause they wanted to make room for the next year's models. It still works great and has as good a picture as almost anything I've looked at since, but it has to weigh 250+ lbs. I'm not looking forward to the day it needs to be replaced.

We got $200 off ours on Craigslist!!!!! Just about 3 weeks ago.
I have a Sony Vega, not that big but half the picture went out on it. It was a microchip that caused the problem. I took it to Travis and they fixed it for under $100. That TV has a great picture for being a regular TV. Good for watching things not in HD.

I had my old 36" Toshiba repaired a little over a year ago by VJ's in Ankeny. It was having a similar problem and he was able to come to my house and repair if for about $60. It seemed like a good deal to me, especially since he came to my home to do the repair instead of me lugging it into his shop.
