Need wireless internet help

Am having problems with my wireless network. My computer is in my basement office and is wired to my modem and router. My wife's computer is upstairs and uses wireless to connect. My wife is always complaining that her internet "won't go." So, I fiddle with it a little and always have been able to get it to "go." I saw today that the signal strength was 32%. I assume this is the problem. Anybody have any suggestions on how to improve this besides just moving the computer (not feasible)? I could hard wire it, but would have to put holes in sheetrock etc.

Well are you very far away from the router?

Is her computer a b/g card?

What kind of internet service do you have?

You could always try powerline networking. You basically plug an adapter into two outlets in your house and plug them into your computer and router.

I would go the route jumbo suggested or, you can get yourself a wireless repeater that can boost your signal strength.

Her computer is on a different level of the house, but probably only20' to 25' away. I don't know what a b/g card is.

I haven't heard of this. Is this like the Billy Mays wireless light switch that you can mount anywhere?

Seriously though, is this like a signal booster or something? I have one of those cones that transmits my satellite remote control from our master bedroom to the receiver in the basement and it works great.

Wireless is slower than wired. I believe the fastest wireless connections will have 802.11-N devices on both ends. Maybe an upgrade of your router or remote antenna would help.

My mom was having a similar problem with her notebook which was resolved by strategically applying a piece of electricians tape to the wireless on-off switch located on the side of the notebook.

Are you using a 2.4Ghz wireless phone or anything else that uses that frequency? They can interfere with wireless networks.

Yes, actually we do have several cordless phones. I hadn't thought of that. Is there an easy solution to this if it is what is causing my problem?

No, they actually work. It's basically a couple of modems that you plug into your power outlets.

Yes, your other option is a wireless repeater.

Or you might be able to get a better antennae for the wireless card in your wife's computer.

What router\adapter are you using. Upgrading the router can help. Mine was dropping me all the time, much like what sounds like you're having. I upgraded to a new d-link router, D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router , and things have been much better. Its a little more expensive than some of the cheapo routers, but you get what you pay for. Pair it with a wireless N adapter, and things should be running great.

Or, you could use the modems through your electrical outlets. I use 2, to run from basement to main level and upstairs. This way we run 3 wireless routers. Not perfect, but works fairly well at 10 mbs download.

I think my router is cheap (D-Link DI-524).
